Fuqua has long been engaged with Sub-Saharan Africa through our various partners, alumni network, and diverse curriculum including exchange programs, Global Academic Travel Experience (GATE) elective courses, and Global Consulting Practicums.
These programs have provided students with the opportunity to internationalize their MBA experience, and in recent years, we have been busy building an even stronger foundation in Sub-Saharan Africa so that we can genuinely become embedded and connected in the region.
Assistant Director for Diversity Initiatives
Willie Green is the Assistant Director of Diversity Initiatives at The Fuqua School of Business, and is responsible for admissions recruitment for the continent of Africa. Willie leads initiatives to bring more diversity to Fuqua by increasing recruiting efforts in Africa.
In addition to his responsibilities in Africa, Willie's primary duties include recruiting in major U.S. cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C. He is also in charge of recruitment and yield efforts on the West Coast, and he leads Daytime MBA interview events in San Francisco. Willie is also the lead staff member for the recruitment of diverse domestic students from a variety of backgrounds, including African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Native Americans, women, and members of the LGBT community. He works closely with organizations with which Fuqua has diversity partnerships, including Inside the MBA, the Forté Foundation, and Management Leadership for Tomorrow, to attract potential global leaders with diverse perspectives.
Before coming to Duke, Willie spent several years working as an admissions counselor for his alma mater, the University of Michigan. Willie is currently a student in Fuqua's Cross Continent MBA program. He is particularly appreciative of the incredible student experience, and works closely with faculty, staff, and students to find the right Fuqua MBA program match for emerging leaders.
Willie has a sincere commitment to assisting students develop relationships within the school and among its many stakeholders to create dynamic experiences that will prepare students for the development challenges of the 21st century.

Regional Managing Director, Africa
Sharmla Chetty is the Regional Managing Director for Duke Corporate Education (Duke CE) overseeing the Africa region and serves on the board for Duke Corporate Education Africa, Bigen Africa as a non executive director and a trustee on the board of black share scheme for AVI. She is member on the advisory board at the Business School - Technology University of Tshwane and is a fellow on the Aspen Fellowship Programme (ALI- SA 2012).
Prior to her appointment as Regional Managing Director, Sharmla served as the Managing Director of Duke CE South Africa. Her role is to lead and set strategic direction for Duke CE in Africa and thought leadership. Her expertise includes a strong focus on emerging markets, business acumen, human resources practices and processes, including executive education, organisational development, and talent management, etc. She leads the client relationship management, advisory work and building client organisations’ strategic capacity and capabilities. Her role is to help prepare leaders to face new challenges, solve business issues, and shape a better future for their organisations as well as contributing to the bench strength of the continent. She brings a “glocal” perspective to clients, merging global best perspectives with local understanding of the market. She has experience working in a range of industries including financial services, healthcare, mining, petroleum and FMCG. She has extensive experience working in many geographies including other geophraphies in Africa, China and India.
Prior to joining Duke CE, Sharmla was the Head of Human Capital Development at Nedbank and has over 19 years of experience in this field. She was responsible for Management and Leadership Development, Grants and Education, Skills Development and Strategic Learning having worked extensively with HR practices and processes. Sharmla worked extensively on large integration projections across different geographies in various capacities and partnership with strategic group alliance to execute organisational strategy.
Sharmla studied at University of Johannesburg (Rau) and holds qualifications Human Resources Development and had studied with other Business Schools in South African. She obtained her MBA from Henley Management Business School in the UK. Her dissertation achieved a distinction in the field of corporate social responsibility.
Her passion includes working in the area of corporate social responsibilities and contributing to the building the skills and development of the continent. Sharmla is innovate, a rule breaker and willing to change challenges into opportunities.
Fuqua collaborates with various groups and organizations—both internally and externally—to embed and connect in Sub-Saharan Africa. By partnering with others, we not only have a greater impact in the region, but we also learn more about the region's needs and assets by pooling resources and knowledge.

Our students are increasingly interested in Sub-Saharan Africa, and many have engaged in the region through formal Fuqua programs such as these:
Global Academic Travel Experience (GATE) — This course combines classroom instruction with international travel to provide an overview of the business and economic conditions in a region or specific country. A GATE class has traveled to Africa every year since 2003, when GATE was established. More than 334 students have participated in Africa GATEs-making it one of the most popular GATE destinations. Countries visited in the past include South Africa, Zambia, and Botswana.
GATE students study the business, culture, economy, and politics of a country or region for 6 weeks before traveling to the area. The travel portion of the course is typically 12 days in length during which students visits multinational corporations, local enterprises, government agencies, exchange program partner schools, alumni and other partners in the region. Students also visit significant cultural, historical, and social landmarks such as the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Robben Island where former President Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, and the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
For each Africa GATE, students also find ways to give back by organizing clothing drives or collecting money and school supplies to donate to schools, orphanages, and other organizations in Africa.
Fuqua Client Consulting Practicum (FCCP) — This Daytime MBA elective course enables students to participate in collaborative consulting engagements with a variety of businesses and organizations. Students assist their client organizations in addressing existing and emerging challenges. Clients are based in the U.S. and internationally. With international clients, students travel to the field, including Johannesburg, South Africa, for on-site consultation with their clients. FCCP clients in South Africa range from social enterprises to multinational corporations.
The FCCP builds on a history of Fuqua engagement in South Africa through the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE). From 2008 through 2012, CASE's Global Consulting Practicum in Social Entrepreneurship (now a part of FCCP) sent 115 students to Johannesburg to work on various projects with social enterprises tackling issues such as poverty alleviation, economic development, and social transformation. Health Management Education
- Johnson&Johnson Health Management Fellowship — This fellowship program brought faculty members from schools in Africa to Fuqua with the goal of improving their capabilities in health management research and program development. The faculty members spent 2 months at Fuqua where they are supported and mentored by faculty, and then spent a week at UCLA's Anderson School of Management. After completing the program, the fellows return to their home country to apply their new knowledge and skills to enrich their institution's teaching and management capabilities. The program was administered by the Management Education & Research Consortium (M.E.R.C.).
- Management for Healthcare Professionals — A course that was designed for participants from NGOs, hospitals, clinics, and government agencies offered by Wits Business School, in partnership with Fuqua and Duke Corporate Education. The course was divided into 2 modules of in-class instruction, connected by a 2-month mentoring phase during which students completed a mentored project.
- Mid-Level Management Training Programme — The objective of this program was to improve health outcomes in Nigeria by improving the management skills of mid-level managers in the primary health care sector across the country. The program taught basic general management and health policy skills. The program began by Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate (Weekend Executive MBA '06) who is Executive Director/CEO of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency of Nigeria.
- Uganda Health Sector Initiative — Faculty from Fuqua, the Duke Global Health Institute, and Duke Divinity School were working with three leading universities and three faith-based medical bureaus in Uganda to assess new opportunities for capacity building in health care management and leadership. The team conducted a systematic literature review, a needs assessment survey, and a series of short training courses over a 20-month period. This work laid the foundation for the development of comprehensive recommendations to build local health sector leadership and scale-up management and leadership capacity within the Ugandan health system.
Business Management Education
- Wits-Duke Grow Your Venture Programme — This small business education certificate program began in 2009 as the Grow Your Business Programme. The program sought to improve the business skills of entrepreneurs in South Africa who had established their initial ventures and needed management and leadership skills to reinforce their initial success while seeking opportunities to expand. The program was a collaborative venture between the Wits Business School and Fuqua. The program was designed to include 2 week-long residential terms with in-class instruction in strategy, marketing, leadership, and financial management. In addition, students completed a mentored project focusing on their business.

Black Management Forum — Fuqua has partnered with Duke Corporate Education’s South Africa office and the Black Management Forum (BMF) since 2009 to offer education fellowships to deserving members of the BMF. The BMF is a non-racial, thought leadership organization founded in 1976, with the main purpose of influencing socio-economic transformation in South Africa. After a rigorous application review process, Fuqua awarded full tuition fellowships to The Duke MBA—Cross Continent program (2010), the Advanced Management Program (2011), and the Duke Leadership Program (2012). Fellowship applicants are evaluated on the basis of their academic and professional achievements and ability to translate what they learn into meaningful social and economic change in South Africa.

Executive Education — Fuqua works closely with Duke Corporate Education in South Africa to identify organizations who are seeking non-degree Executive Education programs to further develop their management ranks. As corporations select non-degree continuing education, Duke Executive Education partners with human resource and talent development professionals to facilitate groups of executives participating in our US-based courses. Fuqua has hosted groups from the health care, financial services and mining industries.
