Career Management Center

Welcome Fuqua Students! The Career Management Center (CMC) assists students in their pursuit of summer internships and permanent employment by facilitating interaction between students and employers and providing a wide variety of programs to meet a range of career interests and needs. As you enter The Fuqua School of Business we are honored to help you achieve your career goals.

Read the preliminary Orientation Packet for more detailed information about key dates for the 2005-2006 academic and recruiting year, recommended "pre-assignments", and resources and technology that will be available to you once you start in August. Please keep in mind that much of this information will not make sense until you are here and can understand it in context. Also, most of the online resources we refer to will not be available to you until you start at orientation.

Programs and Services

Career Planning Appointments:
There are four Career Counselors for daytime MBA students in the Career Management Center. Each counselor is aligned with functional and industry focus areas. Students can choose a counselor to work with throughout their career search process. Career Counselors help students with their strategic vision and personal marketing plan as well as with tactical career tools such as resumes, cover letters and mock interviews.

CareerLeader Assessment Tool:
Most MBA students (over 80%) do not have a clear idea of career direction when they arrive on campus. Understanding your own personality, motivations, reward values and skills is essential for traveling your unique career path. This on-line assessment tool, provided at no charge to you, can help you identify your strengths in conjunction with career fields. If you did not receive a password to set up your account, please email Reggie Chandler at
cmc-info@fuqua.duke.edu.

Workshops:
The CMC will provide helpful workshops, panel speakers and other programs throughout the year to assist you with the job search process.

Online Resources: (no link)
Fuqua's online career resources assist you in achieving your career goals by providing direction and tips on various stages of the career search process. In addition, our online resources will provide you with access to company information, recruiting contacts, and mentors.

Career Fairs:
The fall career fair will be held on September 28, 2005. This event provides an excellent opportunity for students and employers to get acquainted and discuss job responsibilities and career paths in an informal atmosphere. Fuqua partners with other North Carolina MBA programs to host The North Carolina Career Fair during the spring semester. The career fair is organized by the MBA programs at Duke, NC State, UNC, and Wake Forest. This fair encourages companies who may not use the traditional recruiting process to come to campus and see all that our students have to offer by providing a time and cost effective recruiting method.  In addition, Fuqua also participates in a virtual career fair. This year 17 schools and 46 companies from around the world gathered at managers2recruit.com for two days of networking and interviewing.

Special Interest Presentations (SIPs):
Beginning mid September, firms visit Fuqua to host company presentations/briefings, what we refer to as SIPs, where employers and students discuss the company and career opportunities in more depth. Most of the over 100 SIPs open with an audio/visual presentation followed by a question-and-answer period where students and employers mingle in a social setting. Company representatives typically include recruiters, hiring managers and Fuqua alumni.

Interview Preparation:
Seminars and mock interview sessions are provided throughout the year, with particular emphasis placed during terms 1 and 2, to assist students in preparing for the interview process. Special focus is placed on effective self-marketing, transferability of skills and proper packaging of oneself when career-switching. We also encourage you to schedule a video-taped mock interview with your counselor.

Effective Job Search Strategy:
The CMC encourages students to use a combination of on and off campus strategies and personal resources to secure summer and permanent employment. Read The 6 Cs article for tips on an effective job search.

The "On Campus" Job Search
The office manages a very extensive on-campus recruiting program (over 200 companies visit annually) and posts correspondence opportunities from employers throughout the year. Recruiting begins in October for permanent positions and in January for summer internships. The mix of on-campus recruiters reflects student interest and Fuqua's corporate relationships. For additional company information, please go to this page: Companies Hiring Fuqua MBAs

The "Off Campus" Job Search
In addition to leveraging Fuqua's existing recruiting relationships, students should also conduct a parallel job search leveraging a combination of their own personal network, Fuqua alumni and Duke alumni resources. Many of our current "on campus" recruiting relationships were formed because a Fuqua student sought out and landed an "off campus" opportunity, made a positive impression and introduced the appropriate company contacts to the Career Management Center.

Career Fellows:
One of the many things that distinguish Fuqua's Career Management Center from that of its peers is the existence of the Career Fellows Program. As you enter Fuqua, one of your most valuable resources will be the second-year students. With this in mind, the Career Fellows Program was created. Each year, a group of second-year students are selected to help the first-year class through every aspect of the internship process.

Career Fellows are diverse in their background and experience so that there may be a good match with a student's industry and/or functional areas. Working with a Career Fellow will give you the opportunity to develop and review marketing tools, including resumes and cover letters, as well as providing information and feedback on how to conduct networking and job interviews. Career Fellows are available to work with you throughout the school year and will schedule a time that is mutually convenient.
