DURHAM, NC-Duke University's Fuqua School of
Business, Duke's Athletics Department, and Duke Corporate Education
Inc. will present The Coach K/ Fuqua School of Business Conference
on Leadership August 21-23 on the Durham campus.
"Never before have we worked this closely with other parts
of Duke to make a major contribution to the understanding of leadership
both in the corporate board room and on the basketball court, "
Duke Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "There are valuable
lessons on leadership that our speakers have learned in both places,
and that is what we hope to impart to our audiences in August."
Fuqua Dean Douglas T. Breeden said, "We were working separately
on this subject of leadership earlier this year but came together
when we learned about each other's plans. We admire what Coach K
has written about leadership in his two best-selling books, and
we know a lot as well. This is an extraordinary opportunity for
us to pass that along." "I have never seen a stronger
group of speakers and sponsors come together on this topic,"
according to Duke Corporate Education CEO Blair Sheppard. "From
Wednesday night through Friday night, the variety and depth of the
conference will be unequaled."
The kickoff address on leadership will be given by Coach K Wednesday
night Aug. 21 in a speech in newly air-conditioned Cameron Indoor
Stadium.
On Thursday, Aug. 22 at Fuqua, a series of keynote addresses and
panel discussions will feature:
Stephen Cooper, the restructuring specialist who is the interim
CEO of Enron; Ivan G. Seidenberg, co-CEO and president of Verizon
Communications; John J.Mack, CEO of Credit Suisse First Boston;
G. R. Wagoner, Jr., CEO of General Motors; Alan D. Schwartz, co-president
of Bear Stearns; Robert Ingram, chief operating officer and president,
pharmaceutical operations, of GlaxoSmithKline; James M. Benson,
president of MetLife individual life insurance; Betsy Holden, co-CEO
of Kraft Foods; Martin Luther King III, president and CEO of the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference; Mark V. Hurd, president
of NCR and COO of its Teradata Division; and Laurence Kirshbaum,
chairman and CEO of AOL Time Warner Book Group.
Topics include: Leadership in Turnaround Firms; Leadership in Mergers;
Leadership and Social Responsibility; Ethics, Compensation, and
Balancing Disclosure vs Company Secrets; and Leadership in Sports
Management.
Thursday night Aug. 22, there will be a Coach K Celebrity Roast
in Page Auditorium featuring former Duke basketball players and
celebrities from the worlds of entertainment and sports. Jay Bilas,
a former Duke basketball star and current ESPN commentator, will
be master of ceremonies for the roast.
A Charity Celebrity Golf tournament, hosted by UPS, will be held
Friday Aug. 23 at the Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club.
That night the conference will conclude with the second annual
Duke Basketball All-Star Charity Game featuring Duke alumni battling
other NBA stars in Cameron. As with the roast of Coach K, donations
will be made to the Emily Krzyzewski Family Life Center in Durham,
which is named for the coach's late mother, and to the Duke-Durham
Neighborhood Partnership Initiative.
Sponsors of the three-day conference are Credit Suisse First Boston,
FORTUNE magazine, AOL Time Warner Book Group, GlaxoSmithKline, Kraft
Foods, the Teradata division of NCR, Nike, and the State of North
Carolina Department of Commerce. The Washington Duke Inn and Golf
Club is the official host hotel of the conference.
Registration is $1,000 for the leadership conference the night
of Aug. 21 and all day August 22. Tickets to the roast, golf tournament,
and basketball game will go on sale separately beginning June 3
through the Duke Ticket Office.
