ENRGYENV 627 - Business Strategies for Sustainability

Course Description

Do companies’ efforts to address environmental and social issues improve their business performance and results?  The Dow Jones Sustainability Index says “Corporate sustainability is a business approach that creates long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks deriving from economic, environmental and social developments.”  In this course, professor Dan Vermeer will use case examples from Coca-Cola, Nike, Dow Chemical and ABB to demonstrate how strategy tools are used to incorporate environmental and social considerations into financial, marketing, product development, and operational decisions.  We will also examine how these efforts yield positive returns by reducing business risks and costs, capturing new marketplace opportunities, addressing stakeholder pressures, and gaining long-term competitive advantage.
