COLE Partners in the Launch of the Duke Entertainment Media Arts Network
May 27, 2009
The Fuqua/Coach K Center on Leadership & Ethics (COLE) recently partnered with the Duke Alumni Association and the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts, to launch the Duke Entertainment, Media, and the Arts Network (DEMAN) in Los Angeles. On April 14, 2009, over 300 Duke alumni and friends joined Duke leaders, Sterly Wilder (Assoc. VP, Alumni Affairs), Dr. Scott Lindroth (Vice Provost for the Arts), and Mike Schoenfeld (VP of Public Affairs and Government Relations) to learn about Duke's leadership in the arts, entertainment, and media industries and how alumni engagement can strength the university's strategic initiative in this arena.
The LA launch also featured three distinguished Duke alumni who are leaders in the entertainment and media industries - Fred Goldring '79, P'13, Partner, Goldring Hertz & Lichtenstein LLP; Jack Coleman '80, Actor, Heroes; Robert Yeoman '73, Cinematographer, Royal Tenenbaums.
While traditionally, the University has served as a birthing ground for many careers in the Arts, Media, and Entertainment industries, the DEMAN launch comes at an interesting time in Duke's Arts strategy. Part of the Duke reputation in leadership is that it produces graduates who are not just technical experts, but are leaders of influence in their industries and are game-changers. Furthermore, Arts, Entertainment and Media at Duke is becoming increasingly a cross-disciplinary endeavor. More students are applying their majors beyond the traditional professions in the field. Many of those who enter these industries come from backgrounds other than the arts.
Through the DEMAN program, Duke is helping its graduates expand their industry contacts and share best practices. Furthermore, the University is helping to develop a stronger talent pool for the arts, entertainment, and media industries through identifying alumni industry leaders as mentors for its students. Alumni interested in joining DEMAN can do so via Facebook at DEMAN .
Currently, the University is planning to continue the momentum with an event in New York City and a weekend on campus this fall. Visit the DEMAN web site to learn more about the network and make sure to update your contact information on the alumni directory . Interested in connecting with current students and fellow alumni? Join DukeConnect , Duke's new online career and life-stage networking database.
The DEMAN program is one of several engagements by COLE to bridge leadership efforts throughout Duke University, by forming dynamic partnerships and leveraging Duke's intellectual resources to build on existing programs as well as developing ones. Read more about COLE partnerships.
