In recognition of the extraordinary educational opportunities afforded by Chairman Bair's visit, Blair Sheppard, Dean of The Fuqua School of Business; Bruce Kuniholm, Dean of the Sanford School of Public Policy; and Lawrence Baxter, Professor at Duke Law School, joined Chairman Bair on the dais for the discussion. Seth Gardner, Executive Director of Fuqua's Center for Financial Excellence, moderated the panel. The format and discussion themes for this event were designed to highlight the cross-disciplinary confluences and educational interconnectedness associated with financial regulatory reform.
The panel discussion explored an array of pertinent topics, including the FDIC's role in implementing financial reforms set forth in the Dodd-Frank Act. The group also explored ethical and accountability issues relating to the 2008 financial crisis. Bair noted that a stronger moral compass and sense of a responsibility would have gone a long way in avoiding the financial crisis, which revealed a "systematic breakdown in accountability." Bair and the panelists also stressed that academic institutions should endeavor to enhance students' comprehension of the ethical responsibilities that they will assume in their careers and the regulatory frameworks that will govern their professional environments. The panelists, representing three academic disciplines, noted ways in which their schools are teaching and preparing students to become leaders of consequence and professional excellence.
Video of Bair's visit is available on the Duke on Demand video archive.
Bair's visit was sponsored by Fuqua's Distinguished Speaker Series and the Center for Financial Excellence. The Distinguished Speaker Series brings a variety of corporate and government leaders to campus to engage with students and the broader Duke community around pertinent business issues. The Center for Financial Excellence drives Fuqua's MBA students to develop the acumen, knowledge, and skill sets to become finance practitioners and leaders of consequence and excellence. As a core part of its mission, the Center advances students' awareness of the competing business, public policy and regulatory interests that define the financial industry.
