CFE Hosts Bootcamps on Valuation Methodologies and Business Evaluation

January 08, 2012

The Center for Financial Excellence (CFE) regularly administers educational programs that bridge fundamental classroom concepts with real-world industry applications.  On December 7, the center ran two such programs.

A team of Credit Suisse investment bankers, including Managing Director Steven Pierson '95 and Avinash Vijaysankar '09, administered the first session of the day, a six-hour boot camp on valuation methodologies and sell-side best practices. During the program, students were given valuation assignments, which were critiqued by Credit Suisse's professionals. The Credit Suisse team also described the roles and responsibilities of investment banking professionals, including what it means to be a trusted advisor.

Two private equity professionals from CVC Capital Partners led the second event, a 3.5-hour case study on business evaluation and the due diligence process. The CVC team summarized its due diligence analyses on one of the private equity firm's investments, explained its investment rationale and the process by which they discerned the key value drivers of the business. During the session, students worked in teams to answer business evaluation questions based on the same briefing materials that CVC received at the beginning of the actual investment process. The student teams presented their analyses to the CVC professionals and received specific feedback that deepened the students' understanding of business evaluation best practices.

Through programs such as these, the center is advancing MBA finance education and helping Fuqua MBA students develop the acumen, knowledge, and skill sets to become finance practitioners and leaders of consequence.
