Boston: Career Workshop

Monday June 21, 2010

Time:

7:00PM - 9:00PM

Location:

The Nonprofit Center, Community Room ~ 89 South Street ~ Boston, MA

Description

As an extension of Fuqua Career Management Center's participation in the MBA Career Services Council, we have the opportunity to offer a career session titled 'The 90 Minute Job Search,' based upon the book currently in development by Steve Dalton, 2004 Fuqua Graduate and Associate Director of the Career Management Center. Mr. Dalton developed this system (called the Dalton Method) by drawing on his experiences as a strategy & operations consultant for A.T. Kearney, a marketer for General Mills, a career coach, and a Duke MBA student.

Details about the Program

In his 2004 book The Paradox of Choice, social theory professor Barry Schwartz found that offering shoppers many options causes rather than alleviates anxiety.  The off-campus / post-MBA job search presents similar contradictions, confronting job seekers with infinite options but no peace of mind.

Unfortunately, most job search instruction to date is just as open-ended as the search itself - laundry lists of recommendations which incorrectly assume job seekers have unlimited time to "find what works."   In response, Duke University's Fuqua School of Business has implemented The Dalton Method, a unified high-efficiency job search process designed to be followed exactly.

The lecture will last 90 minutes and will cover all three modules of The Dalton Method: Creating a Company List, Crafting High-Efficiency Outreach, and Conducting Effective Informational Interviews.

Here is what one participant in a past session had to say about this system: "[The Dalton Method] helped me go from feeling completely lost and overwhelmed to feeling like I had a focused strategy that would end in an offer…  [The Dalton Method] will undoubtedly be the only way I conduct job searches in the future."
