Upcoming Events

Difficult Conversations, June 3, 2008

Sheila Heen, Founder and CEO of Triad Consulting Group and Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, will be at Fuqua on Tuesday, June 3, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm in Geneen Auditorium.  The topic of Sheila's talk will be "Difficult Conversations." All Triangle alumni are invied to attend this presentation.

Through Sheila's consulting practice she has worked with a wide variety of clients.  In addition to corporate clients like Ford, Citigroup, IBM, Shell, DuPont and Merck she has also provided training for the Singapore Supreme Court, assisted Greek and Turkish Cypriots grappling with the conflict that divides their island, and worked with Requestors who talk to families about donating loved one's organs for the New England Organ Bank.  In May she will be attending FBI Hostage Negotiation School.  As a lecturer at Harvard Law School she teaches courses for executives and lawyers.  She has also done a wide range of project work with other universities as well.

Sheila spent ten years with the Harvard Negotiation Project, developing negotiation theory and practice.  She specializes in particularly difficult negotiations - where emotions run high and relationships become strained.  Sheila is co-author, along with Douglas Stone and Bruce Patton, of the New York Times Business Bestseller, Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most (Penguin 2000). One of the side benefits of writing Difficult Conversations has been the chance to appear on shows as diverse as Oprah and the G. Gordon Liddy Show, NPR's Diane Rehms Show, Fox News and CNBC's Power Lunch.  Her articles on negotiation have appeared in the Negotiation Journal, Oprah's O Magazine, Fortune and USA Weekend and Real Simple Magazine.

Distinguished Speaker Series

Fuqua's Distinguished Speaker Series (DSS) has provided significant educational enrichment that is a natural complement to the school’s curriculum since 1984. Past presentations are available for viewing on Fuqua's iTunes U site. Alumni are welcome to attend DSS presentations. Visit the Distinguished Speaker Series page for the complete schedule.

Fuqua on Board

The Fuqua on Board program matches Duke MBA students and local alumni with Durham area nonprofits to serve as non-voting board members during the course of the academic year. Over the course of a seven-month apprenticeship, pairs of students work closely with a board mentor, participate regularly in board meetings and attend relevant committee meetings. Students serve as non-voting board associates, gaining valuable insight into the inner workings of nonprofit organizations while providing the nonprofits with fresh perspectives and critical business skills. In addition, he reviewed the Career Management Center services currently available to alumni.

He led an informative and thought-provoking session on how to assess your talents rather than focus on what you need to change. What you do with what you know is the challenge!
