Fuqua Reunions 2008

More than 600 Enjoy North Carolina Sunshine at Fuqua Reunions 2008!

Fuqua Reunions 2008Many thanks to the more than 600 alumni and their families descended on Durham, North Carolina, for a great weekend of food, fun, and catching up with old friends. The members of the classes of 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, and 2007 enjoyed the great weather and Carolina barbeque, while seeing how the school has grown and changed over the years.

Photos from the Weekend
Stay tuned to the Fuqua alumni site for photos from the weekends' festivities. If you would like to share an online album with the rest of your class, please send the link to alumni-relations@fuqua.duke.edu, and we will post it on your class Web site.

Class Gift
The reunion classed committed over $900,000 to Fuqua's Annual Fund in honor of their reunion year—more than $100,000 above the goal! Class standouts include the Global Executive MBA class of 2003, who exceeded their goal by more than 300 percent, and the Daytime MBA class of 1983, who had a 37 percent participation rate. Many thanks to all of the alumni who contributed to this outstanding effort. Your generosity is what allows us to continue to provide top-notch programs for future business leaders.

A Major Coincidence: Fuqua Friends Follow Parallel Patriotic Paths

Fuqua SoldiersWhen U.S. Army Major Michael McElrath briefed the man relieving him in Iraq back in 2006, he knew he was leaving his post in good hands. He was already familiar with the fellow taking over his job: his friend Major Chip Daniels, a fellow Fuqua alumnus. McElrath (Class of 2002) and Daniels (Class of 2003) have a third friend, Major Everett Spain, who is also a Fuqua graduate (Class of 2002) serving in Iraq on the staff of General David Petraeus. The three studied together at Fuqua and later served on the staff at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Now they are using their MBA experiences to help restore Iraq's security and infrastructure. Read more.

GEMBA Students at Taj Mahal"There Were Some Who Had Tears..." Students' Donation Will Help Provide Limbs to Needy

Sometimes simply being aware of a problem doesn't feel like it's enough. We're compelled to give, perhaps even in the most practical way possible. When nearly 100 students in The Duke MBA—Global Executive program spent a residency in early 2008 in India, they observed poverty on a scale most of us never witness. Traveling by train to visit the Taj Mahal, the students saw firsthand the challenges faced by a nation in the process of emerging as a global economic power while some of its citizens struggle to rise above an impoverished existence. The India residency included a lecture by Mr. D. R. Mehta, founder of Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), the world’s largest charitable organization offering artificial limbs free of charge to those in need. The organization is well known for the development of the “Jaipur foot,” the world’s first sub-$40 artificial foot, an inexpensive and durable prosthetic. Read more.

What's on Your Nightstand?

Alon BravIn each issue, FuquaNet will ask a faculty member what he or she is reading. Here's a list of books currently on Professor Alon Brav's nightstand:

The Number Sense: How the Mind Creates Mathematics, Stanislas Dehaene (Oxford University Press). The book describes the number sense of infants and adults and how the adoption of symbolic systems of numerals resulted in higher mathematics. The books also offers the critical link to the workings of the brain and neuronal activity.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat: And Other Clinical Tales, Oliver Sacks (Touchstone). This is a book by a neurologist presenting an array of neurological disorders based on fascinating cases experienced during his years of medical practice.

Spinoza and Other Heretics, Vol. 1, Yirmiyahu Yovel (Princeton University Press). This book traces the background and environment that led to Baruch Spinoza's philosophical revolution and the radically new principle--the philosophy of immanence.

Wittgenstein's Poker: The Story of a Ten-Minute Argument Between Two Great Philosophers, David Edmonds and John Eidinow (Faber and Faber).

Global Leaders: Growing and Innovating in a Flat World

The Global Leaders Program (GLP) brings together two leading business schools from India and the United States in a partnership to offer a world-class program for executives who are leading global organizations or evolving global organizations. This senior executive education program will bring together leading faculty from Duke and the Indian Institute of Management–Ahmedabad (IIMA) as well as global executives from diverse organizations to offer a powerful developmental experience. The program will not only be taught by these two faculties, but will also be taught on two campuses on different sides of the world to create a deep understanding of how to grow, innovate, and lead in a multi-national, multi-cultural environment in an increasingly "flat" world.
