Women's Perceived Weaknesses Are Actually Leadership Strengths
The prevailing stereotypes that women in business are too sensitive or just not as competent as men form the frame of the glass ceiling. But once a woman has shattered that barrier to advancement, these same biases may work in her favor. A perception of sensitivity and competence causes women to be evaluated as better leaders than men in comparable positions, according to a recent study in the Journal of Applied Psychology. The research, led by Fuqua Assistant Professor Ashleigh Shelby Rosette, showed that top women executives credited with responsibility for their own success can be viewed simultaneously as more competent and more relationship-oriented than men, leading them to be perceived as more effective leaders than their male counterparts. read more »

2.7 Million Reasons Why We Don't Have Enough Primary Care Doctors
Choosing primary care over a specialty career costs physicians an estimated $2.7 million in potential lifetime earnings and wealth. With 32 million more Americans about to be covered for primary care by the health care reforms, the current shortage of primary care providers may become more acute. Fixing the shortage could require policy changes to reduce this income gap, say Bryan Vaughn and Steven DeVrieze, 2009 Daytime MBA graduates.

TiVo Is Not Kryptonite for TV Ads After All
When digital video recorders (DVRs) like TiVo went mainstream, advertisers assumed the devices’ fast-forward buttons would doom the traditional 30-second TV spot. Most advertisers surveyed said they planned to reduce their television ad budgets in response. But using TiVo actually has no effect on consumers’ buying behavior. People with TiVo don’t fast-forward nearly as many ads as you might expect. “Companies are afraid of a ‘TiVo effect’ and are changing their media spending as a result,” says Fuqua Professor Carl L. Mela. “But we find no change in people’s shopping patterns when we compare a group that has TiVo with a group that doesn’t. The manufacturers’ fears seem to be overstated.” read more »

Spotlight on Executive Education: Advanced Management Program

The first session in the Spring 2010 Advanced Management Program (AMP) recently took place. The program is constantly evolving to meet the needs of leaders in a dynamic business environment. Since current research indicates that lifestyle can promote or hinder energy, stress, and mental performance, Fuqua has partnered with Duke Integrative Medicine to incorporate this philosophy into AMP. Personalized health coaching allows participants to navigate a range of nutrition and fitness options to promote optimal well-being and a mindful routine that will last far beyond the scope of the program.

All elements of the first installment of the program were extremely well received resulting in high evaluation marks – a perfect 5.0 overall score!

“Right time, right place, perfect message. I feel privileged to have benefited from this well thought out journey of self discovery and leadership development. I can’t wait to get back for Part 2! Go Duke!”

David Herbert
Sr. Business Leader - Caterpillar, Inc. and recent AMP participant

Duke MBA Students Consult with Social Entrepreneurs Across the Globe

By Erin Worsham, Associate Director, Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship
In March 2010, 62 first- and second-year Daytime MBAs traveled to Jaipur, India; Johannesburg, South Africa, and Dangriga, Belize to consult with 11 social enterprises. The students tackled issues ranging from education to health care to economic development. Paige Elisha, a first-year MBA student who participated in the India Global Consulting Practicum (GCP) said, “Leaving India, I felt an incredible sense of clarity for my own life and was truly recharged by my GCP experience. My time working with a microfinance organization was incredibly challenging but also made me hungry to make an impact on others. I was inspired by the nonprofit we worked with, by my fellow classmates and by the realization that we can all change the world with the skills we are learning at Fuqua.” learn more »
