Campout: A New Tradition
Get ready to participate in a new tradition—a whole new way to do Campout—from wherever you are in the world. Inspired by Campout on campus, alumni Campers complete a number of required "check-ins" over a defined period of time for a chance to enter a lottery for coveted prizes, including the elusive Duke-UNC ticket. This inaugural year only, Campers will have a chance at the grand prize of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join Coach K and team aboard a charter jet for games in China and Dubai this August. Stay tuned for more information, and go ahead, start spreading the word! Registration will open mid-to-late June at www.fuqua.duke.edu/campout. Get in the spirit by sending us photos of your on-campus Campout experiences! Please direct all photos and Campout questions to the Campout Committee at campout-committee@fuqua.duke.edu. |

Executive Education Hosts GSOM Executives
Fuqua's Executive Education department hosted 52 Russian Executive MBA students from St. Petersburg State Graduate School of Management (GSOM) in April for two Operations Management training courses. Along with Fuqua's Professor Fernando Bernstein, participants explored queuing theory, logistics, and inventory management through a combination of class lectures, case studies, a corporate visit to John Deere, and a guest lecture with Walmart’s Director of Store Innovations, Mike Graen. Professor Bernstein has incorporated knowledge gained from class discussions of managing operations in Russian companies during this program into the core Operations Management course that he teaches during Fuqua’s Cross Continent MBA program residency in Russia. learn more about executive education » |

Employment Ads Perpetuate Traditional Gender Roles, Study Finds
Recent graduates browsing job announcements may not be conscious of it, but employment ads can signal whether a job is typically held by men or women, according to researchers at Fuqua, Princeton University and the University of Waterloo. The clues come in the form of gendered words like competitive and dominant (male) versus compassionate and nurturing (female), the researchers report. Both men and women show a preference for job descriptions matching their gender, women more strongly so. But no one in the study was aware of the effect, the researchers discovered. read more » |

Botox Injections May Reduce Communication Along with Wrinkles
Botox injections may hide more than just the effects of aging. New research from Duke and USC found people injected with Botox may have trouble telling what other people are thinking and feeling. The disconnect appears rooted in people's unconscious tendency to read others' emotions by mimicking their facial expressions. The study, by David Neal, a psychology professor at USC, and Tanya Chartrand, a marketing and psychology professor at Fuqua, appears in the current edition of Social Psychology and Personality Science. It furthers the theory that humans decode each other's expressions partly by simulating the perceived expressions of others in their own facial musculature. read more » |
