CFO Survey: U.S. Economy Improving Slowly, but Not So Surely
graphChief financial officers in the U.S. say they have limited plans to hire over the next 12 months, although nearly 60 percent won't return their staffing to pre-recession levels until 2012 or later. Benefits and wages also remain at reduced levels at many firms, and credit is still tight for small firms, which is hindering hiring plans and constraining growth. The recovery is not completely stalled, however, as CFOs predict strong business spending and earnings growth. read more »

Financial Services Companies Adjusting Globalization Plans
The push by financial services and insurance companies to establish new offshore operations leveled off in 2009. At the same time, firms seeking cost reductions show greater interest in contracting with large international service providers to benefit from their economies of scale and scope, rather than creating fully owned offshore subsidiaries. These are among the findings of Financial Services Offshoring: Moving Toward Fewer Captives and Global Cost Competitiveness, which is based on the fifth annual study on offshoring trends by the Center for International Business Education and Research’s (CIBER) Offshoring Research Network (ORN) at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and The Conference Board. read the full press release »

Executive Education Spotlight: GSOM Operations Management Program
During the week of April 12-16, Duke Executive Education hosted a group of 38 Russian leaders who took part in an Operations Management Program led by Professor Fernando Bernstein. The program was run by our Russian partner, the Graduate School of Management at St. Petersburg State University in Russia. Fuqua's involvement enabled the participants to interact with top tier U.S. business school faculty to discuss fundamental topics and trends in operations and supply chain management. Students participated in lectures and simulation activities as well as a corporate visit to Nomacorc, the world’s leader in synthetic wine bottle closures. They were also joined by Tom Weck, VP of Global Market & Product Development at Johnson & Johnson, who spoke to the group about information sharing and strategic partnerships in supply chains. At the end of the program, students received a certificate of completion for the course.

Health Sector Management Alumni Mentorship Pilot a Success
By Ray Bedeaux ‘10
Ray BedeauxAs a recent graduate of Fuqua’s Daytime Class of 2010, I have occasionally been told the value of my degree rests in those three letters—M, B and A—that I now get to place behind my name. Though I do not deny that my newly acquired acronym is valuable, I would argue that the real value of my degree comes from the network of Fuquans I have built along the way. As a student, I was especially impressed with the alumni network, as alum after alum took time out from their busy lives to help me and my peers grow as leaders and eventually find successful careers. This year the Health Care Club, in cooperation with the Health Sector Management (HSM) program, sought to formalize this relationship by establishing an alumni mentorship pilot with first-year students as mentees. read more »
