Give to Fuqua
14 Days and Counting!
The 2011 Fuqua Annual Fund closes on June 30. There’s still time left for you to make a difference and help us reach our goals of $2.7 million and 4,500 donors. As of June 13, alumni and friends had contributed $2,183,000 to The Fuqua Annual Fund. Through contributions alumni can have a positive impact on faculty support, scholarships, research and program innovations. If you have already contributed this fiscal year, THANK YOU. Executive Education Hosts 2011 AMP Reunion Event
In April 2011, Duke Executive Education hosted the first Advanced Management Program (AMP) reunion event since the program’s redesign in 2008. AMP graduates and Fuqua alumni attended the session, "Shaping the Future: Leadership Skills for a VUCA World" (view video), by Rick Voirin, Adjunct Professor and AMP Orchestrator. The session challenged attendees to reflect upon world-changing events and be mindful that our future business landscape is rife with VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity). Professor Voirin and session guests discussed leadership skills necessary to shape an uncertain future. Interested in bringing VUCA preparation into your business? Fuqua alumni receive a 40 percent tuition reduction when attending AMP. learn more » |

CFO Survey: Moderate Economic Growth, Slow Job Market
Optimism among chief financial officers in the U.S. has fallen, but spending plans indicate continued moderate growth over the next year. Hiring will be minimal—less than 1 percent over the next year—though many companies plan to reinstitute some employee benefits. These are some of the findings of the most recent Duke University/CFO Magazine Global Business Outlook Survey. The quarterly survey, which concluded June 3, asked 806 CFOs from a broad range of global public and private companies about their expectations for the economy. read more » |

For Money or Fame: Why Politicians Attack
The next presidential election is nearly 18 months away, but we've already seen potential GOP presidential hopefuls questioning President Obama's citizenship. Does this mean the 2012 campaign will be as nasty as 2008? New research examining negative political advertising says yes, and the data may even help explain why the attacks are happening so early in the election cycle. Candidates with deep pockets or who are well known to voters are much more likely to use negative advertising, says study co-author Ron Shachar, professor at the Arison School of Business, IDC, Israel, and a visiting professor at Fuqua. read more » |

Observing Others Reach Their Goals Can Make Us Less Likely to Reach Our Own, Study Shows
One might assume that watching someone reach a goal or complete a task would inspire us to match that success. However, new research indicates the opposite may actually be true: seeing others succeed can actually reduce our motivation. These findings are reported in the May issue of the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and are based on experiments conducted by a group of professors who study organizational and social psychology. The researchers are Fuqua's Grainne Fitzsimons, Kathleen McCulloch of Idaho State University, Sook Ning Chua of McGill University, and Dolores Albarracin of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
