How Offshore Operations Affect Corporate Tax Payments
image of Barack ObamaPresident Barack Obama recently proposed tax law changes that would limit companies' ability to defer U.S. taxes on foreign profits, a change the government estimates would help it raise $86.5 billion over 10 years. New research from Professors Scott Dyreng of Duke's Fuqua School of Business and Brad Lindsey of William & Mary examines the intricacies of corporate tax payments on offshore profits, and tallies the total tax burden of companies' operations outside of the U.S. read more »

Economic Stimulus, Tax Breaks, and Corporate Liquidity
Corporate tax breaks included in the recent economic stimulus package, formally known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009, could add an estimated $20 billion of liquidity to the corporate sector in 2009, according to analysis by Finance Professor John R. Graham. Graham and Ph.D. student Hyenseob Kim analyzed the extent to which U.S. companies could benefit from a provision in the stimulus expanding the use of net operating loss carrybacks. This provision allows a company that is losing money today to spread today's loss backwards in time to profitable years, ultimately allowing the firm to obtain a refund for taxes paid on those previous years' operating profits. read more »

Health Policy vs. Health Politics
by Kevin Schulman, M.D.
(an entry from the Duke Research Advantage blog)

image of ambulance and moneyThe policy goals for health care reform are so clear it should be easy: 1) improve access to health care services — defined as access to insurance; 2) improve the quality of health care services — through health IT; and 3) reduce the cost of health care — through competition or structural changes in the system, such as reform of the small group market. From a policy standpoint, we can debate the intricacies of these various issues and use data or theory to support our arguments. What is happening now in Washington is not health policy, but health politics.

The Fuqua Annual Fund - Fiscal Year 2009 Results
It should come as no surprise that overall charitable giving trends for fiscal year 2009 were down compared with last year. The good news is participation among Fuqua alumni and friends remains very strong, and monthly totals in June 2009 exceeded the previous June in total dollars and donors. We are working hard to ensure that trend continues through the next twelve months.

Fuqua Annual Fund Giving: $2,268,810 (-13%)
Fuqua Annual Fund Donors: 3,642 (+1.2%)

Our deepest thanks goes to the donors who made a financial commitment to Fuqua this year. learn more about how you can support the school through the Fuqua Annual Fund »

Dean Blair H. Sheppard Invites You to the 8th Annual Fuqua School of Business & Coach K Leadership Conference
Coach KA failure in leadership is at the heart of the financial crisis of the last year. There is abundant evidence that across many domains we do not have the leaders we need. Developing such leaders is the mission of Fuqua and Duke, be it in the classroom, on the playing field or in service. We know it is important not only to develop our students to be leaders of the future, but to encourage continued leadership development. For this reason the Fuqua & Coach K Leadership Conference was created eight years ago. I would like to encourage you to join us at this year’s conference, which will explore key perspectives and skills that participants need to lead effectively in today’s uncertain times. read more »
