Oncologists Value Survival Over Quality of Life, Duke Study Finds
image of pillsFor oncologists, drugs that help cancer patients live longer are worth more than drugs that help patients live well, according to research from Fuqua and several health-related centers. "Oncologists are understandably focused on survival, but they need to pay equal attention to the quality of life people experience during and after treatment," said senior author Peter Ubel, M.D., the John O. Viewer Multi-Tasking Means More Online Searches for TV Advertisers
Browsing the Internet while watching TV is a great way to kill time during commercial breaks, but are advertisers losing out if consumers surf while the commercials roll? Not according to Ken Wilbur, a marketing professor at Fuqua, who found commercials influence the terms people use to search on websites like Google and Bing. "Advertising on television changes what people search for. We use more branded keywords and fewer generic keywords," said Wilbur. read more »

Founded by Christine Moorman, T. Austin Finch, Sr. Professor of Business Administration, the CMO Survey collects and disseminates the opinions of top marketers in order to predict the future of markets, track marketing excellence, and improve the value of marketing in firms and in society. Join us for the Duke Start-Up Challenge: Alumni Track, hosted by the Duke Global Entrepreneurship Network (DukeGEN). Simply submit a two-page document describing your idea by Thursday, February 10, at 5:00 p.m. ET. Alumni who submit the top 35 ideas will be invited to complete a business plan and investor pitch and present these via conference call in March. The best teams will be recognized and promoted through the DukeGEN network and other alumni communication channels. Feedback will be provided to everyone who submits an idea. learn more »

Join CASE for TEDx on Social Entrepreneurship
As part of a recently announced partnership between Duke University and Ashoka, the global network of leading social entrepreneurs, CASE will host the first-ever national conference on social entrepreneurship in higher education February 25-27, 2011, at Fuqua. Entitled the "Ashoka U Exchange," the conference will draw nearly 300 faculty, administrators, and students from more than 50 colleges and universities. To kick off the conference, Duke alumni are invited to join us in person or online 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25, for a TEDx event featuring distinguished social entrepreneurs who have innovative ideas about the role of colleges and universities as drivers of positive social change. read more »

Fuqua Annual Fund Donations Up for End of 2010
Many thanks to our donors for helping us make a strong finish to calendar year 2010! We ended the year with $1,162,301 in gifts from 1,842 donors. This represented a 2 percent increase in dollars raised, and a 7 percent increase in the number of donors relative to December 31, 2009. We will continue to work toward our fiscal year 2011 goal of $2.7 million and 4,500 donors by June 30, 2011. Fuqua Team Wins Deloitte National Case Competition
It is with great pride that we announce that a team of Fuqua students has won the inaugural Deloitte National Case Competition held in Miami in early January. The team was comprised of four first-year MBA students, Flavio Campus, Phyo Noe, Sumesh Nair, and David Campos, who had won the 17th Annual Duke-UNC Case Competition in November. These four represented the best of Fuqua and walked away with a shared prize of $20,000 and Deloitte Summer Associate offers. read more »

 

Alumni Invited to Participate in MBA Games Auction
MBA games logoThe Duke MBA Games leadership would like to invite alumni to participate in the MBA Games auction benefiting Special Olympics of North Carolina (SONC), on Friday, February 18, 2011, at Fuqua. SONC is a not-for-profit agency providing year-round sports training and athletic competition for over 40,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities statewide. Since its inception in 1989, the Duke MBA Games has raised over $1.8 million for this worthy cause and has established itself as SONC's largest sponsor.
