Goals of The Duke MBA Admissions Volunteers
The goals of the volunteer network are:
- To promote and enhance The Duke MBA’s global reputation and the benefits of a Duke and Duke MBA education.
- To encourage prospective applicants whose personalities, needs and motivations are well-suited for Duke MBA student life.
- To increase our yield of admitted students by converting more students from admitted to enrolled status.
- To assist the Admissions office with recruitment activities.
If you would like to sign up or receive more information on volunteering for admissions, please send an e-mail to the Office of Admissions.
Ways to Volunteer
There are several ways you can help the Admissions team recruit the next Duke MBA classes this year.
Attend a Recruiting Event
Throughout the fall we will sponsor information sessions in major cities for people who have expressed an interest in The Duke MBA. If you live in or near a city hosting an information session, we will contact you 3-4 weeks prior to the session. The sessions will include a presentation by a member of the Admissions Staff and a current student, an alumni panel discussion and an opportunity for candidates to mingle with alumni. Even if you are not comfortable sitting on a panel, we need your help to answer general questions and discuss your Duke MBA experience with reception attendees. Information Sessions typically last no more than two hours.
The Fuqua School of Business also participates in MBA Forums all over the world. An MBA Forum is similar to a trade show or career fair for prospective MBA candidates. There are usually 150 schools from around the world. Each table is staffed by alumni, students and staff. Prospective applicants attend these forums to get information about multiple business schools and to speak with representatives of the institutions. Alumni may volunteer to staff the Duke MBA booth during forums and speak with prospective applicants. Many applicants have mentioned that such contact with alumni is beneficial to them as they decide which schools interest them most. If you live in or near a city hosting a forum, we will contact you 3-4 weeks prior to the forum. You can also help by identifying additional MBA fairs held outside the US, which could be beneficial for The Fuqua School of Business to attend. Our budget is limited and these fairs can be expensive. However, we may be able to pay the fee if we have alumni volunteers to represent us at the program.
Recommend an Applicant
Do you know someone who is applying for Duke MBA admission who would be a great candidate? We want to hear from you. Please complete our alumni recommendation form and tell us why that person would be an asset to one of our MBA programs.
Interview an Applicant
The interview is invaluable in assessing an applicant’s general management knowledge, level of maturity, interpersonal skills, career direction, leadership skills, and English proficiency – all qualities we consider essential for effective management. Applicants who can interview on campus have the opportunity to experience Team Fuqua firsthand as they see our excellent facilities and interact with our students. Applicants who live on the West Coast of the United States or outside the United States are eligible to request an alumni interview.
Interviewing with a recent alumnus/a allows an applicant to learn more about The Duke MBA from that individual’s experiences. Remember that the people whom you interview will often equate YOU with The Duke MBA. This is especially true for international applicants who have difficulty coming to campus. This is yet another reason why you are so important in the alumni interview process. In addition, having been through the program, alumni are equipped to evaluate applicants regarding skills that do not always come out as strongly in the written application. Please review this document carefully to be prepared for conducting interviews and contact the Anne-Caitlin Procopio in the Admissions office via phone at 919.660.7705 if you have any questions.
Call an Admitted Student
We ask alumni to volunteer to congratulate our admitted students and answer any questions they may have about their experiences earning The Duke MBA. On rare occasions, a prospective applicant will ask to be put in touch with a local alumnus/a. After we have received confirmation of your availability, we will ask you to contact the prospective student.
