New Directions in Leadership Research
A principal activity of COLE is encouraging and supporting the exploration of leadership issues and ethical behavior, as well as bridging the gap between theory and practice, by engaging leading scholars in rigorous research and drawing on the rich experience of the business community.
Consistent with this research-based approach to leadership, COLE hosted its inaugural New Directions in Leadership Research Conference on May 31-June 1, 2008. The conference convened more than 40 scholars from six countries and included research presentations on leadership topics including: inspirational leadership, diversity, trust, leader responsibility, global leadership, and sources of leader effectiveness and ineffectiveness. 2008 Second Annual COLE PhD Dissertation Proposal Competition
This national competition is designed for doctorate candidates whose research contributes to the understanding of leadership and ethical issues facing the business community. Proposals are judged on the contribution that they make to the scholarly understanding of ethical and leadership issues in business as well as on their theoretical and methodological quality. Winners will receive a $1,000 honorarium and be asked to present their research at COLE's second annual Academic Research Conference in 2009. The selection committee include Kim Wade-Benzoni (Chair), Associate Professor of Management and COLE Center Scholar and Jim Emery, Adjunct Professor and COLE Research Director.

Research: Publications / Papers / Presentations
Research by COLE-affiliated scholars on a number of other critical leadership issues including trust, loyalty, organizational stewardship, and leadership vision is on-going; presentations addressing preliminary findings from these projects have been made at the Academy of Management conferences, the COLE New Directions in Leadership Research conference, and by invitation at a number of leading universities.

COLE Center Scholar Ashleigh Shelby Rosette wins Teaching Award Ashleigh Shelby Rosette (Assistant Professor of Management and COLE Center Scholar) received the Excellence in Teaching Award for an elective course for the 2007-2008 Academic Year. The award was officially presented to Ashleigh by the students at the May 10, 2008 Duke MBA Cross Continent graduation ceremony.

COLE cultivates leadership development opportunities beyond the classroom context. Two examples of such opportunities are the COLE Leadership Fellows Program and the Fuqua Daytime MBA student club, Leadership Development Initiative (LDI).
Class of 2009 Leadership Fellows Selected
Now in its 4th year, COLE recently selected 34 rising 2nd Year students for the 2008-2009 Academic Year. The COLE Leadership Fellows Program is supported by a grant from Cushman & Wakefield, Inc. COLE Leadership Fellows Honored
- The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Susan Hazard (Class of 2008). Awarded annually to a second-year Duke MBA Daytime student whose service and commitment have made a significant positive impact on the Fuqua Community.
- The Dean's Recognition Awards were presented to Aparupa Bhattacharya, Mary Garris, Suzanne Steffans, and Laura Simonson (Class of 2008). Awarded annually to students who have provided truly exemplary service to the school. 12 students were recognized for this award.
- Fuqua Scholars for The DukeMBA Daytime Class of 2008. This designation is given to students whose grade point average places them in the top 10% of the graduationg class. Our congratulations to the 35 recipients including COLE Leadership Fellows Stephanie Cox and Susan Hazard.
- Dean's List for The DukeMBA Daytime Class of 2009.
This designation is given to students whose grade point average, after their First Year, puts them in the top 20% of the class. Our congratulations to all 85 recipients, including the COLE Leadership Fellows: Robin Abramowitz, Dan Aycock, Anupam Bhandari, Michael Foss, Kat Jones, Ken Tomei, John Troy, and Peter Weld.
LDI - Student Club Annual Leadership Conference
On April 16, 2008, the LDI, in partnership with the COLE, hosted its annual student leadership conference, the 2008 Duke MBA Leadership Experience. Over 400 attendees had the opportunity to listen to distinguished speakers share their thoughts and discuss practical experiences pertaining to the role of leaders in Building World-Class Leadership Teams.
Speakers included COLE Executive-in-Residence, Mike Krzyzewski, Head Basketball Coach of the Duke University Men's Basketball Team and Coach of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team; Alison Levine, MBA ' 00 and captain of the U.S. Women's Mt. Everest Team; Ben Dunlap, a college president and Rhodes Scholar; and Nathan Whitaker, co-author of the New York Times best-seller, "Quiet Strength", and legal council to NFL and college coaches and administrators.
Second Year Send Off Program (SYSO) – April 9. COLE co-sponsored a one-day program hosted by The Duke MBA Career Management Center to help Second Year's start thinking about the transition from student at Fuqua, to leader in the workplace. COLE developed a panel titled: Toolkit for Success: Leadership Lessons from the Not-So-Distant Future. Moderated by Jim Emery, panelists included Fuqua alumns: Keith Artin, MBA '99, COO of Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers, Inc. (TROSA); Jan Bouten, MBA '03, a Principal at Aurora Funds, a Venture Capital firm; and Jonathan Gindes, MBA '03, CFO and SVP of Business Development at Affinergy Inc.
Other co-sponsors include The Duke MBA Career Management Center, Development and Alumni Relations, MBAA, and Finance Club.

The Duke Leadership Program: The Multiple Domain Approach (June 1-6, 2008) In this week-long executive leadership development program, participants learn about leadership effects and associated behaviors and gain self awareness through a 360 degree feedback tool and coaching. Sim Sitkin and Allan Lind are faculty leaders. Next iteration will be held August 17-22, 2008.
7th Annual Fuqua & Coach K Leadership Conference
Oct. 20-22, 2008. Theme: “Leading in Challenging Times: Overcoming Crisis, Sustaining Excellence, and Growing Intelligently.” More than 20 chief-suite level executives will speak at the leadership conference in scholar-moderated sessions.
Participants will also engage in a Duke Men's Basketball practice session in which Coach K links the principles of leadership with the game on the court.
