I liked everything I heard in our discussions about where the ICE research and expansion are going. Keep up the great work!

InterCultural Edge (ICE) is a scientifically validated cross-cultural communication instrument. Duke CIBER leads this initiative in collaboration with The Fuqua School of Business, Richard Lewis Communications,, and 3 other CIBERs that have supported the program since its inception in 2004.

The ICE core research team (also known as the ABC team) began work on, a website based on the work of Richard Lewis, and developed a way to validate the instrument scientifically. The ABC team is comprised of Professor Wendi Adair from the University of Waterloo, Professor Nancy Buchan from University of South Carolina, and Professor Xiao-Ping Chen from University of Washington.

The tool that resulted from their collaboration is now called InterCultural Edge (ICE) and is housed at Duke CIBER. All incoming MBA students and Cross-Continent Executive MBA students are exposed to the instrument, which allows them to have a deeper understanding of their cultural profiles and communication styles. Faculty members utilize the instrument in negotiation, team building, and preparation for their study tours or residencies abroad. Moreover, they benefit from the research and publications. Duke is currently working to make ICE available to participating CIBER institutions after undergoing a certification process and planning to make this resource available to the public in the near future.
