Energy Industry Fundamentals
Sept. 1-2, 2011

For the first time in 2011, Fuqua's Center for Energy, Development, and the Global Environment (EDGE) and the Duke MBA Energy Club offered a new two-day Fall graduate student workshop on Energy Industry Fundamentals (EIF).

The EIF was aimed at students who have little or no previous work experience in the energy industry, but are looking to transition into an energy industry career. Opened to first-year MBAs as well as students in other Duke graduate programs, the EIF offered a fast-paced, immersive introduction to key energy issues, terms and trends. The EIF was led by key Duke faculty and experts in energy economics, policy, business, and technology, and included presentations, discussions, and a networking dinner.

Participants gained:

  • An introduction to energy industry fundamentals and key issues/trends facing the industry
  • A snapshot of the energy system as a whole and understanding of where various companies/employers fall on the energy landscape
  • A perspective on energy in the context of sustainability and environment
  • A chance to meet key Duke faculty and thought-leaders on energy topics, and glimpse Duke's deep academic offerings in energy discplines across campus
  • An opportunity to network with Energy Club members and develop an interdisciplinary cohort of graduate students from across campus
