Leadership Conference to be Held at Fuqua School of Business

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University's Fuqua School of Business will host its first Annual Leadership Conference on Wednesday, April 17, 2002 as a one-day leadership development experience for Fuqua MBAs and the Duke and Durham community.

"This is a great opportunity for MBAs and area business people to improve their leadership skills and learn how to be outstanding leaders who are committed to successfully operating and improving their organizations throughout their lifetimes," said Jeremy Rogers, Fuqua 2002, and deputy director for the conference.

The conference is open at no charge to students, faculty, staff, the general public, and alumni from Duke and MBA students from other top business schools. It will feature structured workshops on "How to Develop a Vision and Core-Values for Your Organization"; "How to Develop Others"; "How to Lead Informally as a New MBA Hire"; and "How to Provide Community Leadership".

Jan Ingledue, Fuqua 2003 and vice president of operations for the conference points out that "Participants can tailor the conference to fit their needs by attending the workshops that correspond to areas where they seek personal development".

Additional conference highlights include two keynote addresses. The first will be from Walter Boomer, CEO of Rogers Corporation and former United States Marine Corps commanding general in the Persian Gulf War, who will speak on "Why Leadership Is Important in the Business World and Leadership During Times of Crisis". The second keynote is from Alan Jope, chief operating officer and former director, Thailand Division, of Unilever PLC, who will speak on "Leading in a Multicultural and Diverse Organization".

Seasoned government, non-profit, and business executives will lead the workshops, including a former investment bank COO, two chairmen of the board of non-profits, several senior managers from top consulting, private equity, and health care firms, and the senior professors from the Department of Leadership at The U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

There is no charge for participation in the Annual Leadership Conference.
