Duke's Fuqua School of Business to Start MMS Program in the UAE
November 07, 2011
DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business is launching in the United Arab Emirates a new program, Master of Management Studies (MMS): Finance, beginning this spring.
Building on Fuqua’s global strategy, the MMS: Finance program will mark the first time the school will run a degree program completely outside the United States, said Fuqua dean Bill Boulding.
Designed for working professionals in the finance industry, the part-time program is intended to provide students with a strong foundation in management, including a special emphasis in finance and accounting, delivered in a format that supports students’ professional responsibilities.
The new program further reinforces Fuqua’s presence in the Middle East. Since 2008, students from Fuqua's Cross Continent and Global Executive MBA programs have taken part in residencies in the UAE, where they have engaged with local leaders and examined various institutions to gain a deeper understanding of regional dynamics.
“Business education must be embedded and connected among disparate regional economies to remain relevant,” Boulding said. “The MMS: Finance program in the UAE gives our faculty the opportunity to not only prepare future leaders through their teaching in the classroom, but to also take the insights from the region and bring them back to Duke.”
MMS: Finance will be taught by Fuqua faculty with content tailored to markets and institutions in the Middle East. The program consists of 13 courses and begins with a quantitative skills course to ensure all incoming students are at a comparable level. The next eight courses cover a full breadth of business classes and are complemented by four additional financial and accounting courses.
The new program will mark Fuqua’s second MMS launch in recent years. The school unveiled the MMS: Foundations of Business program in 2010, which is held on Duke’s main campus in Durham, N.C.
“MMS: Finance is particularly tailored to address the needs of working finance professionals in the region,” said Kathie Amato, associate dean for MMS programs. “Although it is not a pre-experience degree like the MMS we deliver in the U.S., MMS: Finance will give students a more comprehensive understanding of business fundamentals and enhance their finance knowledge and skill set so they are better prepared for increased responsibilities in their careers.”
