2009 Duke MBA Workshop for Minority Applicants

November 19 - 22, 2009

Application Deadline is October 19, 2009

The online application is now closed.  Please email mbaworkshops@fuqua.duke.edu for more information.

Full agenda and additional information will be posted soon.

Duke's Fuqua School of Business is committed to the development of diversity among business professionals. Each year in November, we offer a workshop addressing the needs of minority ethnic groups who are interested in management careers in business.

The Duke MBA Workshop for Minority Applicants provides information and support to prospective students in an effort to improve the representation of underrepresented minority students in business school. The entire Duke community, not just our minority community, shares a long-standing commitment to diversity. Thus, the workshop is open to all prospective MBA candidates, regardless of their background, who share this interest. Student members of the Black and Latino MBA Association serve as hosts for the 3-day workshop. Many Fuqua alumni return to share their educational and professional insights with participants.

What to Expect: The workshop incorporates both formal and informal interaction with Fuqua students, alumni, faculty, and administrators. Members of Fuqua's Admissions staff share information on matching prospective students' specific needs and abilities with various MBA programs, and provide insight into the application process. Also:

  • The Director of Financial Aid explains financing options for graduate education.
  • Career Management Center staff members discuss career planning and post-MBA opportunities.
  • Fuqua alumni discuss the role of the MBA in their own career development.
  • Attend representative first-year classes to become familiar with the functional areas, curriculum, and teaching methods in a graduate management program.
  • Talk informally with current students, faculty, and alumni.
  • Tour the facilities at Fuqua and other parts of the Duke University campus.
  • Hear from prominent members of the business community.

Apply: Fuqua invites 80 attendees to the workshop. You must submit an application for consideration. The application consists of a questionnaire (including a brief essay section), which is available online

For Participants: Participants who are invited to attend the workshop should plan to arrive in Durham on Thursday afternoon and stay through Saturday night. The workshop will begin on Thursday, November 19, and closes on Sunday, November 22. Participants will receive a complete agenda prior to the workshop. All expenses incurred by participants (except travel to and from Durham, incidentals such as personal phone calls, and room service) will be paid by Duke University. Invitation to The Duke MBA Workshop for Minority Applicants does not guarantee admission to The Fuqua School of Business.
