Expertise and Research

Geographic differentiation, product differentiation and innovation, especially as it relates to the pharmaceutical industry. His research on geographic differentiation has examined why firms might locate near rivals despite resulting price competition. His product differentiation research examines how "me-too" drugs (close substitutes for the market leader) compete on price and advertising, and how regulatory policies affect firms' incentives to invest in research and development. Ridley, with Henry Grabowski and Jeffrey Moe, crafted a legislative proposal that became law in 2007; it allows developers of treatments for neglected diseases to receive a priority review voucher. In 2007, Ridley also received a Weekend Executive MBA teaching award.
