Important Graduation Updates
You will recieve a parking pass when you pick up your graduation apparel on Friday, May 10. If you need additional passes for your guests or are unable to pick up your apparel on Friday, you can download a pass here. Please be sure that you print the pass on white paper and display it in the front windshield of your car. This pass will allow you and your guests to park in the Whitford Lot near Cameron.
Graduation Map and Line-up Instructions
A graduation map and line-up instructions have been provided to help you navigate your way on graduation day. Please review the map and line-up instructions prior to Saturday, so you know where you need to be and when. The schedule is very tight, so be sure to arrive on time and in your apparel!

For students and guests unable to attend in person, the graduation ceremony will be streamed live. Be sure to have the link ready by 8:45 am Eastern Time, so you don't miss a moment!
Parking, Transportation, & Access
Saturday Parking and Special Needs
Saturday's ceremony will take place in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Each student will receive a Saturday parking pass when they pick up their apparel allowing their family to park in the Whitford Drive parking lot near Cameron and Wallace Wade Stadium. The entrance is off Science Drive between NC 751 and Towerview Drive (across from the Fuqua entrance). A handicap accessible drop-off area is located in the circle driveway in front of Cameron (access via Whitford Drive). Additional parking and overflow parking will also be available; plenty of "Event Parking" signs will be posted to help direct you.
Special Needs Access for Ceremony
Please encourage your guests to be seated by 8:30 am on the stadium's lower level (ground floor). Ushers will be available to assist. If someone in your party will need special seating, please contact us prior to Tuesday, April 30th at 919-660-7673 or email@example.com
Sunday's ceremony will take place in Wallace Wade Stadium. Uniformed University personnel will be available throughout the campus to assist with parking. Suggested parking lots include: Whitford Drive, Science Drive, Highway 751, Green Zone (along Frank Bassett Drive), and Wannamaker. Accessible drop-off areas for individuals with disabilities can be found at the Wallace Wade North Gate (Whitford Drive to Cameron Indoor Stadium), and Wallace Wade East Gate (Wannamaker drive behind indoor tennis venue). Golf carts will also be available in the parking lots to assist with transport.
Pick up your apparel at the Thomas Center on Friday, May 10 between 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm. The staff members distributing the caps/gowns can show you how the hood is to be worn, as it is a bit tricky! Your hood should be worn draped around your neck with the largest portion of the hood hanging down your back. The velvet border, which indicates your specific field of study, should be showing on the outside. The velvet should fold under on the lower back to allow the colors to show.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
If possible, wear a shirt that buttons in the front. This will allow you to hook a string from the hood to the button; keeping the hood from sliding.
Ladies may want to bring hair pins to help secure the cap and safety pins to secure the hood if you do not have a shirt with a button.
Business casual or business formal should be worn under your gown.
The tassel of the academic cap is typically worn on the left front side; however, for photography purposes we ask that you wear your tassel on the right side during the ceremony.
Leave all personal items with family members.
Business casual or business formal dress is preferred. The weather in Durham can be warm in May (average temperatures are between 55° - 78° Fahrenheit and 12.8° - 25.6° Celsius). Please plan to dress appropriately for the weather, have good walking shoes, bring water, wear sun block (Sunday's ceremony is outdoors), an umbrella, etc.
Since guests will need to walk to the ceremony, reception, and designated parking facilities, please wear comfortable shoes and prepare appropriately for the weather, including rain.
The Saturday graduation events are all indoors and weather will not be a factor. Please plan to attend rain or shine.
For Sunday's ceremony in Wallace Wade Stadium, the event will continue in the event of rain. If weather conditions are threatening, the Graduation exercises will be canceled. If weather conditions are questionable on Sunday morning, you may call the Office of Special Events (919-684-3710) to check the status. The decision will be made and announced by 8:30 am on Sunday morning.
Saturday Graduation Ceremony - Students
Tickets are not required for the Graduation Exercises in Cameron Indoor Stadium. There is unlimited seating.
A professional photographer will take pictures during the ceremony and reception. After graduation, we will provide a website to purchase pictures. Guests are also encouraged to take pictures. Before the ceremony, at 7:45 am, the class will take a class photo outside the north entrance to Cameron in the courtyard area. There will be signs at Cameron directing you to the photo location. We ask in advance that you arrive on time in your graduation attire and cooperate with the photographer to make this session as efficient as possible.
Children at the Ceremony
Children are an important part of this celebration. We encourage you to bring the entire family! However, if you have young children, please be considerate of the audience and keep children out of the aisles.
After the class photo, you will move upstairs to the Hall of Honor and be asked to line up alphabetically. After you have lined up, staff ushers and a bagpiper will lead you into Cameron Indoor Stadium. When the procession begins, please follow the lead of the ushers in charge; they will direct you to your appropriate seating. Please remain standing until the processional music has ended. Procession into Cameron begins at 8:50 am. We ask that your guests be seated by 8:30 am.
There will be a program at your seat that you may use to follow along during the ceremony. When it is time for you to walk across the stage, you will be given instructions by the usher - be alert to their instructions, particularly if you are a row leader. Once your name is called, walk across the stage and shake hands with the Dean. At this time, a photographer will take your picture. Please proceed down the stairs stage left and return to your seat.
The faculty and staff on stage will process off the stage, past the graduates. After the group on stage processes out, an usher will direct the first row of graduates to follow. Graduates process out row by row. Please continue all the way outside of Cameron, allowing all graduates to leave the stadium in a timely fashion. Plan to reconnect with your family outside of Cameron before walking to the reception at Fuqua.
His Excellency Sheikh Mohamed Ahmed Jassim Althani is a former Minister of Qatar's Economy and Commerce from December 2003 until March 2006.
Prior to that, Sheikh Mohamed spent a significant part of his career (17 years) in the oil and gas industry, mainly with Qatar Petroleum, RasGas and QatarGas, during which he occupied several senior posts specifically in marketing of gas, refined products and petrochemicals for Qatar Petroleum. He was the lead negotiator for the long term LNG sales contracts with Japan, Korea, Taiwan, India, Italy and Spain. Through his writings and papers presented, he brought a wealth of insight into many oil and gas conferences based on his global experience in this field in which he is still active as an international consultant.
During his tenure as Minister, Sheikh Mohamed had an active leading role in several domestic and international issues pertaining to trade liberalization within the WTO and the free trade negotiations with several bilateral Qatari partners. Domestically, he initiated and executed a program of economic and trade reforms that included the production and monitoring of economic indicators for the country, balance between the fiscal and monetary policies, reforms within the monetary and operational aspects of the Qatari Stock exchange, revamp of the main Qatari commercial laws, and restructuring the Ministry to operate electronically with a one stop shop of services which led to cutting the lead time to obtain a complete commercial registration from one month to one hour, Lastly, he managed to certify the Ministry with an ISO certification, the first within the Qatari public sector to receive such accreditation. Moreover, Sheikh Mohamed initiated two major projects: the Qatari free zone legislation and the formation of Qatar Financial Centre to its full operation. While at the Ministry he held several positions including the Chairman of Qatar Financial Centre Authority, Chairman of the Doha Securities Market, Chairman of the Measurement and Specifications Authority, Chairman of Qatar International Exhibitions Centre and a board member of the Supreme Council of Economic Affairs and Investments.
Sheikh Mohamed spends most of his time consulting along with conducting research in energy and GCC politics. He is a visiting fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic studies. He is a board member of Qatar Foundation Endowment Fund and Chairman of Qatar foundation Al Khor Academy. Additionally, he is a member of the London Business School Global Advisory board as well as The Fuqua School of Business Middle East Advisory Board at Duke University.
His academic studies include a BAA in Industrial Management and Supervision with a minor in Public Administration from Central Michigan University, a senior executive program from London Business School, and a Global Executive MBA from Duke University.
Immediately following the graduation ceremony, there will be a reception in the Fox Student Center at The Fuqua School of Business. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served.
Sunday Graduation Ceremony
Tickets are not required for the Graduation Exercises in Wallace Wade Stadium. There is unlimited seating. The commencement speaker for the graduation ceremony is Melinda Gates.
All candidates for degrees from the graduate and professional schools should assemble in academic apparel (cap, gown, and hood) on the East Side of the Football Practice Field (located behind the Wallace Wade Stadium scoreboard), no later than 9:00 am. The formal procession begins at 9:30 am. (It takes almost 30 minutes for the nearly 2,600 degree candidates to reach their places for the program.) Processional instructions are provided on the Duke Commencement Website.
Degrees are conferred en masse upon the several degree groups following the principal address. The University Marshal calls upon each degree group to stand, in the order in which that group appears in the printed program. Each degree group remains standing until the degree has been conferred by President Brodhead.
When the exercises are concluded and the platform group and members of the faculty and administration have departed, graduates are then free to proceed to the Fox Center for a reception.
Immediately following the graduation ceremony, there will be a reception in the Fox Student Center at The Fuqua School of Business.
Information for Recent Graduates
Fuqua's Development and Alumni Relations team has developed a website to assist recent graduates in their transition to becoming alumni. The website serves as a great resource for graduates of all programs at Fuqua.
Graduates also have the opportunity to order a class ring through Jostens.
