The Fuqua School of Business launches its new Fundamentals of Management program in November 2009. This intensive, five-day session provides managers with the latest mindset, skills and tools necessary to excel in today's complex business environment.

This program is designed for new managers with increasing business and supervisory responsibilities. It focuses on transforming you from an individual contributor to a team manager. You will gain an understanding of core business and management skills necessary to succeed both long term and in your day-to-day work. This program will help you hone your skills quickly, so you may immediately apply your newfound knowledge to your organization.

The Fundamentals of Management Program has a five-day format.

Day 1: Managing for Success

The first day of the program focuses on managing for success and developing as a leader. You will learn to:

  • Make the transition from being a contributor to being a manager
  • Develop greater insight on your personal style and preferences, and the impact of your behavior
  • Develop skills to give, receive and respond to feedback
  • Implement the key success factors to effectively:
    • Create routines that reinforce and enable productive behavior
    • Delegate
    • Build relationships
    • Be a role model
    • Manage your time

Day 2: Managing Others

The second day will focus on managing others and getting results by delegating. You will learn to:

  • Recognize and adapt to diverse mental models
  • Practice active listening skills
  • Motivate others by studying common myths about and techniques to promote employee satisfaction
  • Effectively coach others to improve performance by providing actionable feedback
  • Develop goals that stretch employees, yet are attainable
  • Build processes to assess progress and support efforts

Day 3: Managing Teams

The third day of the program targets team management. You'll learn how to:

  • Create an environment that fosters successful team performance and engagement
  • Effectively share purpose and vision
  • Align skills, talents, aspirations and styles

Day 4: Managing the Work

Day four is about execution. You will learn to:

  • Develop a more effective decision making process for both you and your team
  • Avoid common decision making mistakes

Day 5: Personal Action Planning

On the last day, you will develop a personal action plan to implement on the job.

The main goal of the Fundamentals of Management Program is to help you become more confident and successful in your managerial role. Upon completion of this program, you will know how to:

  • Embrace your role as a manager and the impact you have on the organization
  • Recognize and leverage the differences between individual contributors and collaborators
  • Effectively coach, influence, and communicate with your team to develop them into superior performers dedicated to achieving business goals
  • Capitalize on your strengths and manage your weaknesses
  • Adjust your personal managerial and leadership style to dovetail with a diverse workforce, creating a positive and productive work environment for all
  • Develop the skills to effectively communicate with all constituents
  • Balance business, team, and personal priorities
  • Employ essential behaviors of collaboration

Participants in the Fundamentals of Management program are typically first-time managers, new project/team leaders, or experienced managers who have had little formal training.

These managers may be considered technical or functional experts in some area, but are not as well prepared to assume the additional responsibilities required to manage broader aspects of the business or to lead others. They seek to understand and apply, in practical ways, an integrated mix of foundational concepts and tools.

Participants come from a wide variety of industries, organizations, functional areas, and locations.

Courses will take place in the heartland of North Carolina at the R. David Thomas Executive Conference Center, part of Duke's Fuqua School of Business. The Thomas Center is one of Fuqua's great assets. It is a state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly residential facility that offers an unparalleled learning environment and extraordinary amenities.
