As the financial markets continue their turmoil in the wake of the U.S. House of Representatives’ rejection of the proposed Troubled Asset Relief Program (evidenced by the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s and the S&P 500’s biggest one-day point losses), we wanted to make you aware of Duke research and resources that can keep you up to date on the situation.
- On Wednesday, October 1, at 3:30 pm EDT, Duke University will host its first President’s Forum on Critical Issues entitled "The Financial Crisis: What Happened, and What’s Next?" The forum will be moderated by President Richard Brodhead and will feature two Fuqua professors, Campbell Harvey, the J. Paul Sticht Professor of International Business, and Katherine Schipper, the Thomas F. Keller Professor of Accounting. Professors Harvey and Schipper will be joined by Craig Burnside, Professor of Economics; James D. Cox, the Brainerd Currie Professor of Law; and David Rohde, the Ernestine Friedl Professor of Political Science. The forum will be recorded for distribution on the Duke University website , YouTube , and iTunes tomorrow afternoon.
- To follow-up on Professor Harvey’s town hall meeting last week, I thought you would find interesting a "news tip" issued to the media yesterday by the Duke University Office of News & Communications: "TARP Not The Answer: Time For Plan B, Duke Expert Says." The news tip was picked up this morning by Associated Press TV and U.S. News.com.
- You also may want to review the latest version of Cam Harvey’s proposal , "The Financial Crisis of 2008: What needs to happen after TARP."
Finally, continue to visit the Fuqua web site for more information on the financial crisis as interpreted by Duke’s faculty.
A Major Coincidence
U.S. Army Majors Michael McElrath and Everett Spain, both Daytime '02, and Major Chip Daniels, Daytime '03 have served together in Iraq, continuing a bond that began at Fuqua and continued through their time teaching at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Everett recently ran into U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander and classmate Andrew Frankel who was in Baghdad in an intelligence capacity. Pictured here are Chip Daniels (left) and Mike McElrath in Iraq in November 2006 doing their transfer of authority in Baghdad. Chip took over for Mike in Iraq -Team Fuqua knows no bounds! The picture was taken on the balcony of one of Saddam's palaces that now serves as an Army unit's headquarters.
