Step 1: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
All U.S. citizens and permanent residents applying for financial assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before applying for the federal student loans with a lender. The FAFSA should be completed as soon as tax information is available (or by the dates stated in the documents linked below) to ensure timely processing of your financial aid application. These are not deadlines, but recommended dates. We will process your financial aid application whenever your FAFSA results and The Duke Executive MBA Financial Aid Form are received. Fuqua does NOT need a copy of the FAFSA.

Use the following information to complete Step 6 of the FAFSA application:
- Title IV Code: E00160
- College Name: Duke University, Fuqua School of Business
- Address: Not required when using Title IV code
If you do not have complete tax information, we recommend you file the FAFSA using your estimated income.
Use one of the following methods to complete the FAFSA:
- Complete the 2012-2013 FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Before completing the FAFSA web application, you should apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) by visiting the U.S. Department of Education's PIN site, www.pin.ed.gov. This PIN will allow you to save time by enabling you to electronically sign your FAFSA. Otherwise, you will have to print the signature page and mail it to the federal processing center.
- Complete the 2012-2013 FAFSA paper application, which you may request by calling 1-800-433-3243.
Receiving Data Electronically
The FAFSA application data and analysis will be received electronically by The Fuqua School of Business from the Department of Education Central Processing Service (CPS). This data will be referred to as the Institutional Student Informational Record (ISIR).
Step 2: Complete The Fuqua School of Business Financial Aid Form
After completing the FAFSA, complete and submit The Duke Executive MBA Financial Aid Form. Your FAFSA results will not be reviewed until this form is received.
Step 3: Receiving your Federal Student Aid Report (SAR)
FAFSA Data Acknowledged
After the FAFSA form has been processed, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the US Department of Education. This report is your acknowledgment that your FAFSA data was received, processed and provided to the institutions you listed. Fuqua will contact you and request any documents or information needed to resolve any issues that resulted from processing your FAFSA application. It will not be necessary for you to verify that your FAFSA data has been received. Check Step 6 of your Student Aid Report (SAR) to confirm that The Fuqua School of Business is included in the institutions to receive a report.
Step 4: Verify your SAR Data & Make Corrections
Verification
Each year the US Department of Education randomly selects students for a process called "verification." As a result, Fuqua must verify that the information indicated on the FAFSA is correct. If you are selected for verification, you must provide a signed copy of your federal tax form (including schedules) and a copy of W-2 form(s). This selection will be indicated in the comments on the Student Aid Report (SAR). Students who are selected for federal verification must also submit the Verification Worksheet. Please see the column at right for downloadable forms.
Corrections
If you find any errors on the processed SAR report, make the corrections, sign and re-submit the corrected SAR to the Department of Education. You may forward a copy of your corrected SAR to The Duke Executive MBA Financial Aid Office as well.
Step 5: Receiving Financial Aid Award Notice
Award Package
Please note that each academic year the Financial Aid Office will begin reviewing student loan requests and sending award notices during March. Once financial need is determined, the Financial Aid Office will send an electronic award notice to the student. The award notice provides detailed instructions on how to accept the award offer and finalize the loan application process. Generally, the award offer includes federal and non-federal loan programs. We recommend that students contact lenders after receiving the financial aid award notice.
Outside Assistance
All students must immediately notify The Duke Executive MBA Financial Aid Office of all assistance received from other sources (such as tuition assistance from employers). You must provide copies of any written notice received as soon as you have them or provide a written statement describing the assistance that will be received. A revision or adjustment of your financial aid package may be necessary to prevent you from being over awarded within federal guidelines. Failure to provide this information could result in the cancellation and/or repayment of all or a portion of assistance already received.
Step 6: Reviewing Award Notice and Applying for Student Loans
After receiving the financial aid award notice, students should follow the instructions to apply for the loans that are awarded to them.
All U.S. citizens and permanent residents with loan eligibility will be expected to apply for the federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Stafford Loan before applying for an alternative student loan. Federal Stafford Loan Master Promissory Notes and your Alternative Loan Applications are completed online.
Please note that the Department of Education is the lender for federal student loans and they will notify borrowers once the loan process is complete. Instructions on how to determine alternative student loan eligibility will be included in the award notice. Generally, federal Direct Stafford Loan eligibility is certified within two weeks after the student accepts the award offer.
The award package will also contain information about alternative student loan programs. Such loan programs may be used to replace expected contributions and, if necessary, allow students to borrow up to the total cost of attendance for the academic year.
Duke Tuition Benefit
Benefit amounts calculated for students receiving the Duke Tuition Benefit are estimated by our office. As result, the amount you actually receive may be different than what is indicated on your financial aid award. Please contact the Duke Tuition Benefit Program Office for your exact amount and notify our office. If you are receiving the tuition benefit, the amounts may change each term which could affect loan eligibility. If benefit amounts differ from what is calculated on your financial aid award, loan eligibility can be recalculated which could result in having to apply for an additional loan.
Reapplying for Financial Aid
Except for merit scholarship awards, financial aid (i.e. student loans) is not automatically continued for the following academic year. All financial aid applicants must submit the updated Financial Aid Form. U.S. Citizens/Permanent Residents must complete a new or renewal FAFSA application to re-establish loan eligibility and reapply for student loans. The type and amount of loans may change according to your needs and available resources.
