Fine Tuning His Job Search Skills

Grant Hill was an incredible basketball player with a plethora of accolades, but throughout his career, he always had a coach. When Scott Schoeneweis played Major League Baseball, he earned a World Series Champion ring, but always perfected his pitch through practice and refinement. Regardless of their levels of expertise, professionals in any industry can always use some fine-tuning and analysis of their "game."

Vijay Shah MBA '85 touts this as a reason for participating in Fuqua's online career workshops. He compares engagement to a workout regimen.

"It's not a one-time thing that gets you to your goal," Shah said. "It's ongoing. It doesn't matter if you just graduated from undergrad, graduate school, or you've been in the working world. Everyone should be practicing to promote their career."

Fuqua's Development and Alumni Relations and Career Management Center teams collaborate to present bimonthly online career workshops. The workshops address career-related topics like social networking, domestic or global career management, job search strategy and more.

"The information is valuable and something everyone could use," Shah said. "It's only about an hour, but if you have the time, there is so much to gain."

"I would say that anyone can use it in any phase of a career," said Shah, who began participating several years ago after becoming CEO at gbITes Healthcare, a small healthcare technology and business services firm. "In a career, there is always the question of 'Am I doing the right thing? Can I do better?' These workshops reconfirm the direction and steps to take, fine tune your skills, and help you stay current with technologies and different philosophies."

The workshops were initially created in 2008 as a way to support Fuqua alumni in the midst of a slowing economy. Previous career workshop materials can be found here

"Alumni can go back and access this content if they need it at a later point," said Katie Thomasson, Associate Director of Alumni Relations. "There are other resources out there, but there's a credibility with Fuqua. Whether participating in a live session or going back later, it's a credible resource for professional development."
