Fuqua First-Year Spotlight – Meet Deland

Deland is pictured on the far left in burgundy during a team challenge

Deland is originally from Round Rock, TX, and prior to attending Fuqua, she worked for 5 years in marketing at Eli Lilly in both Indiana and Connecticut.

1) What has your first fall been like? So far my first year has been amazing! It has been full of more surprises (mostly pleasant) than I anticipated. Fall 1 comes at you fast, and I have been so impressed with the level of engagement from second–years and alumni. Fall 1 is definitely a test of perseverance, but you learn and grow so much over those quick six weeks. For me, the short terms have really highlighted what team Fuqua means. Even though everyone is being pulled in a million directions, they still find time to support the success of their fellow students. I will say, I am really looking forward to the travel opportunities in Spring 1 and 2.

2) How have you gotten engaged in the Fuqua community and how easy has that been? It is very easy to get involved! There are so many options for you to engage and have an impact on your classmates and the broader community that you must be conscious of where you truly want to spend your time. I have gotten involved in admissions and BLMBAO (Black and Latino MBA Organization) as well as being an active member in the Marketing Club and AWIB (Association of Women in Business). I finished with recruiting early, so I have engaged with the rest of my classmates by offering to host case and interview practice. I have also tried to engage on a smaller scale by hosting wine nights and brunch at my home to get to know my classmates better.

3) What are your biggest tips for preparing between being accepted and starting orientation? Take some time to map out what you truly want to get out of this two–year experience. Yes, I know you put all these wonderful things in your application, but truly take some time to think about where you can have impact and where you want to grow. Then, take some time to relax and recharge. You have spent plenty of energy studying for the GMAT, taking the exam, and completing applications. This is the time to celebrate and recharge to prepare for Fall. Orientation and Fall 1 start the grind all over again and you want to be mentally prepared to go all in.

4) Any other tidbits of advice or Fuqua community info that you think admitted students should know? Before the year starts, engage with your future classmates! Go to the meetups that occur in your cities and engage with the conversations in GroupMe and on Facebook. If you have a Fuqua buddy, stay in contact with them and ask them any questions you have as you are getting closer to orientation. Lastly, get excited! You worked hard to get here and we are so happy to have you join team Fuqua!

Centers of Impact

We are lucky to house so many research centers here at Fuqua where you will have access during your MBA. These centers provide a complement to your classroom learning through conferences, leadership opportunities, research, and more. Enjoy reading a bit about each one and its impact. Feel free to reach out to the center contacts through the web links provided if you are interested in learning more!

Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE)

CASE is the first academic center in the country created specifically to focus on social entrepreneurship. Their mission is to prepare business students to solve the world's greatest problems. Throughout the year, they offer a variety of opportunities to engage. Whether it's through events partnering with Net Impact Club, partnering with faculty for courses, hosting speaker series or the Social Impact Business Conference, or its initiative on impact investing, almost all of our students interact with CASE in some way. The most popular and broad–reaching initiative is Fuqua on Board where our students apply to serve as board members for local non–profits in Durham.

Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI)

CEI is our newest center and serves to expand the work on entrepreneurship and innovation at Fuqua through numerous extracurricular and classroom initiatives. Our most popular experiential learning courses assisted by CEI include Program 4 Entrepreneurs and Invention to Application. Outside of the classroom, CEI facilitates the Duke Start–up Challenge, Duke Venture Fellows program, and Day in RTP, and works with the Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital clubs.

Coach K Center on Leadership and Ethics (COLE)

COLE was founded in 2004 as a partnership with Duke Athletics. This center hosts leadership training opportunities for Fuqua and the larger community. As a first–year, students mostly interact with COLE fellows, who are second–year students selected to be stewards of Fuqua's leadership culture and committed to the development of fellow students. Two separate clubs are formed out of COLE: LEADS (small group discussions on leadership) and BOLD (outdoor leadership club). Additionally, Coach K is the Executive in Residence.

Center for Energy, Development and the Global Environment (EDGE)

EDGE serves as a hub for everything related to energy, the environment and sustainability. They explore the intersection of energy and environmental issues as their implications for the business economy of the future. Along with the Energy Club, they host the Energy Conference. They also work closely with the Food & Agriculture Club and Net Impact Club to plan programming. For students planning to take on the dual MBA/MEM, you will work closely with EDGE during your time at Fuqua.

Meet Your Classmates

David Howe:

I have skied since I could walk. For two years, I was a member of the Winter Park Ski Team, waking up at 4 AM every Saturday to catch the bus with my teammates. Those two years taught me how follow through with my commitments and that being present wasn't enough, but to participate as well. There were some mornings when I didn't feel like waking up and mogul practices I wanted to skip but I never did.

John MacDonald:

I told a joke of the day each day of my 360–day teaching career; I'd tell you the one about the roof, but it would just go over your head.

Chaanukya Poojari

I was named after Chanakya, who as per the Indian legends was a renowned Indian philosopher and king–maker! But, my name is spelled "Chaanukya" because that is how my father spelled the name in my Indian naming ceremony! I was irked in my childhood as people used to often inquire how it was different from the legendary Chanakya. Now, as I go about creating my own legacy, my unique name serves as an interesting ice–breaker!
