Fuqua First–Year Spotlight – Meet Luis

Prior to Fuqua, Luis spent 3 years working in brand management at Hasbro on the NERF and TRANSFORMERS brands just outside Boston, MA.

1) What has your first fall been like? Fall at Fuqua has been a wonderfully wild ride! It feels like it's been years since we all arrived in Durham for Orientation – but in the best way possible. From meeting your first–year (FY) team, to the start of recruiting season, to Campout, it's been hard to keep track of all of the impactful experiences we've had in the past few months. Every day is packed with an ever–growing list of classes, clubs, and recruiting, and I am constantly surrounded by incredibly passionate, driven, and caring people. Even though we've all had a ton on our plates, I have been amazed at how much of our time we've given every day to building the impactful relationships that will shape the rest of our 2 years at Fuqua.

2) How have you gotten engaged in the Fuqua community and how easy has that been? Fuqua is a community that really prides itself on being more than just classes and recruiting events – and that all depends on what you're passionate about and bring to the table! For me that has always been a mix of cool brands and jokes. With a slight focus on the jokes. I am currently a FY Producer in FuquaVision – Fuqua's sketch comedy show that happens on the last Friday of every term. I have loved the opportunity to write, produce, and act in sketches that the whole Fuqua community can enjoy. On the brand side, I have been involved in the MBA Marketing Club, which has been immensely helpful throughout my recruiting process and a great place to get to know some of the best second–years on campus. Getting involved at Fuqua is easy – one might say too easy – since there are so many opportunities outside of class and recruiting to make an impact on your fellow students. And if you don't find the organization you're looking for, you can just start it yourself: shout out to Fuqua Ultimate Frisbee!

3) What are your biggest tips for preparing for Fuqua during the time between admission and orientation? BDW BDW BDW BDW BDW. As one of the BDW student co–chairs, I can't say it enough – you absolutely MUST GO to Blue Devil Weekend! Even if you have already submitted your deposit and are committed to being a part of Team Fuqua (congrats!), BDW is one of the most impactful experiences you'll have throughout your business school journey. BDW did more than just introduce me to all of my new best friends. The weekend also allowed me to meet all of the student organizations and faculty that have become such a big part of my Fuqua experience. After BDW, take some time off and CHILL. Seriously. Fuqua is a non–stop–action–packed–high–energy environment, so you're going to need those batteries to be fully charged on day one!

4) Any other tidbits of advice or Fuqua community info that you think admitted students should know? While at this point the GMAT and application are behind you, I'm sure that most of you are starting to worry about some of the exciting challenges ahead with classes, recruiting, etc. Starting now, and continuing throughout your Fuqua experience, try and prioritize HAPPINESS every day. Especially at Fuqua, there are opportunities for you to do what makes you happy every single day – don't get so caught up in school and recruiting that you lose out on making your MBA experience truly transformational!

Hello from Your Office of Student Life!

In the Daytime MBA Office of Student Life (OSL), we work to support and enhance your MBA experience through programming, events, counseling, and advising. From your pre–MBA prep and Orientation through Graduation, we'll do all we can to help you thrive during your two years with us! We are also a central hub of information: if you don't know where to go for something, we can help you find the right information. Between us, our team has over 50 years' experience in higher education – with over 30 of those years dedicated to Fuqua MBAs, so ask us anything!

When you think of us, think of us as the people who:

  • Promote Your Wellness: We care about your full experience in the MBA program. Academically, personally, and developmentally, we work to support your wellness. We develop and connect you to resources for thriving at Fuqua, like pet therapy to de–stress by cuddling cute dogs, Duke's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), or group fitness classes!
  • Act as Your Advocate: From helping you navigate difficult conversations with peers or faculty to developing action plans for your academic success or personal growth, we've got your back! You can count on us to listen and help you achieve your goals while at Fuqua while reducing uncertainty about your path and experiences (plus, we always have candy to share!).
  • Support Co–Curricular Enrichment Activities: We help the MBAA and student organizations deliver countless fun and edifying programs and events, from conferences and tailgates, to service events and an end–of–year beach week. We also add fun when we know you'll need it, like a Cookies & Cocoa study break at the end of Fall 2 or a "Beat the Deans" bracket challenge for March Madness.

We look forward to getting to know you during your Fuqua journey! If you want to get to know us now, you can view some random facts about our team here.

You'll begin hearing from us more regularly this summer, but in the meantime, we encourage you to explore the Incoming Student Website (ISW). We will be making updates to the To Do List and adding new information about the student experience at Fuqua on the ISW throughout the spring and summer – so keep checking the ISW for the latest news!

Meet Your Classmates

Apoorv Pathak:

I played futsal with my colleagues and clients in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The 12 people on the pitch represented 8 nationalities, yet the joy of scoring a goal as a team, even though no one spoke the same native language, was common for all!

Jolie Duhon:

I starred in a FedEx Office commercial in conjunction with 800 Degrees Pizza. It was viewed 12,000 times on their website and 4,000 times on YouTube.com.

Sahana Qaundinya:

I volunteer as a teacher and counselor in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Singapore. I have been a part of this center for the last two years and I started out as a relief teacher for some of the younger kids of the recovering patients. In order to be able to better guide the children to navigate what is an extremely challenging situation, I took a few courses at the center to help with the counseling. I have been teaching and counseling 6 students this last year and one of the most rewarding moments was when all 6 of them passed 'O' levels this January.

Michael Belick:

After I graduated from college, I bought a one way ticket to Europe and backpacked for three months until I ran out of money. I saw 22 cities in 14 countries and flew home with $14.28 to my name. On my way back to the US, I was stranded in the Oslo airport for a 26–hour layover and had to beg airport workers to give me food vouchers, because I didn't have enough money to withdraw cash from the ATMs.
