Fuqua First–Year Spotlight – Meet Travis

Before joining us at Fuqua, Travis (pictured on the left after dinner with his FY team) was a member of Morgan Stanley's Wealth Management Strategy Team in New York City.

What was your favorite memory during your first few months at Fuqua? I've had so many great experiences, from volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, to spending a long weekend in Myrtle Beach, and attending countless classes and (seemingly nightly) recruiting events. Best of all? I was joined by hundreds of my new classmates each step of the way. Out of all these great memories, the one that stands out most is the Mexican Party. Five FYs from Mexico rented a local bar and brought in authentic food and entertainment for the evening. It was a great chance for our whole class to relax and meet people from different sections, as well as members of the SY class. To me, it captured what is best about Fuqua: everyone coming together as a group to get to know each other outside of the classroom, celebrating one of the many different cultures proudly represented on campus, and exhibiting what being a part of Team Fuqua is all about.

What does it mean to be a part of Team Fuqua? Team Fuqua is real. That is something that stood out to me right away when I was admitted. The excitement from the admissions team when they called to tell me I had been accepted was palpable, and things did not stop there. In the days following I received calls, texts, or emails from everyone I had spoken to during the application process, from my interviewer to other current students and even alumni. The most valuable resource was my Fuqua Buddy. Tessa set up time to connect with me over the phone and offered an unbelievably candid view into her experience. She also made sure I knew she was available to answer any additional questions I had before arriving on campus. We texted and spoke on the phone a number of times, and I was able to get her opinion on questions ranging from what I should be doing recruiting–wise before getting to campus to how to prepare for classes and where to live…anything I could think of! This great experience inspired me to manage the Fuqua Buddy program for this year's class.

One piece of advice for admitted students? Take advantage of your Buddy! They are there to help, and no question is too small. Plus, you've already been accepted, so you can feel safe asking what's really on your mind. This is one of the many ways Team Fuqua is here to support you, so don't hesitate to reach out!

Career Management Center Insights

Teri Parker de Leon, '16, Fuqua's Director of Employer Engagement and Operations, discusses recruitment during the first term:

In the Career Management Center (CMC), we continuously work to develop our students into the candidates companies are looking for around the world. Our team starts working with you right away during the summer GIE course. In late August, each sector holds a Career Intensive Day, which is a workshop led by your sector directors in tandem with leading experts from industry. These are designed to help you understand what happens in many of the careers post–MBA.

For first year students, formal on–campus recruiting events start around the third week of the term, and companies will begin employer presentations and office hours for first year students. The majority of company representatives are Fuqua alumni.

After Fall 1 concludes, students participate in Week in Cities (WIC) trips. The trips match our students with industry specific opportunities. For example, Finance might attend the Week on Wall street trip, or Media, Entertainment and Sports might host a week in Los Angeles. The trips consist of visits and presentations at the company site. In some cases, there are employer, admissions, and/or alumni happy hours planned in the evenings. The trips are student–led – coordinated and planned by the MBAA career and professional clubs, and the number of students varies by club. The number of students participating can vary anywhere from 10 to 100! This year's fall break trips are planned for October 23–27, and some clubs will coordinate their trip over winter break, or during the month of February.

As a student at Fuqua, you will have daily walk–up access with our team, in addition to Career Fellows, numerous events, interviews and engagement opportunities available. We have a lot of great resources and our sector directors are excited to start working with you to help you find the right career path.
