Lowell Simpson
“I wanted my business school experience to push me outside my comfort zone. I’ve done that in Duke BOLD, a club that teaches leadership via outdoor adventures. We spent all of fall term training by camping and trekking, which I’d never done before. The culmination was a 7-day kayaking trip from the Andes to the Pacific Ocean in Chilean Patagonia over winter break.”

Why I Chose Fuqua

When I initially thought about attending business school, Fuqua was not even on my list. That quickly changed when I was invited to attend Fuqua’s annual Minority Workshop. It was there that the Black and Latin MBA Organization students really made me feel that I would have a group of people to lean on. I knew from that weekend that Fuqua would be my home for the next 2 years.

5 Random Things About Me

  1. I am an avid musician. I play piano, French horn, cello, and euphonium, and I’d like to learn guitar next.
  2. When I was 8 years old I nearly drowned, and I still vividly remember that day. Interestingly enough, I went on to become a competitive swimmer and still swim to this day.
  3. I'm the youngest of seven children. I think this is why I've always been able to get along with anyone—growing up, I had plenty of time to observe different and competing personalities.
  4. I love to travel and believe travel is the world's greatest teacher. I've been to five continents and have realized the stories and images presented in Western media don't always accurately portray how the world is.
  5. I've run seven marathons, not because of the run itself but because of the journey. The journey of goal setting, training, 6 a.m. Saturday runs, aches, pains, and failures. I enjoy the moment when your body says stop, but your mind commands you to push forward.

My Life Before Fuqua

I was a portfolio manager with the non-profit loan fund IFF in Chicago. IFF provides much-needed capital to other nonprofits that serve low- to moderate-income communities.

My Life After Fuqua

I hope to transition to private wealth management to help nonprofits and foundations to grow, preserve, and strategically manage their wealth.

What I Love About Professor Adriano Rampini

His thick French accent and unconventional sense of humor aside, Professor Rampini made finance easy to understand for a liberal arts nonprofit guy like me. Only he could make the CAPM equation a thing of beauty and illustrate how finance impacts our lives with real-world examples. His teaching really cemented for me the importance of understanding financial concepts. Professor Rampini even went beyond by always having an open door to his office for extra help. Finance ended up being one of the classes that I had the best performance in and learned the most. It was fun!
