Why I Chose Fuqua

When I visited Fuqua during the Veteran’s Symposium, I was concerned about my admissions interview that weekend. While on campus, I had multiple current students offer to help me prep for my interview and continue to help me throughout my application process. There were multiple times where students took time out of their day to provide me advice and feedback. Their willingness to help out a prospective student was a reflection of the type of people I would find throughout the Fuqua community.

5 Best Fuqua Activities

  1. Orientation—as a first-year, this is a fun-filled amazing three days getting to know your new classmates; as a second-year, it’s a chance to connect with your friends after internships
  2. Campout—this is not the type of camping the more experienced outdoorsman is used to; you’ll have a great time and (hopefully) end up with Duke basketball season tickets
  3. FuquaVision—this quarterly event will keep you entertained with original skits and shows from your classmates; the free beer and wine doesn’t hurt either
  4. Wine Around the World—grab your wine glass and join your classmates as you rotate around apartments to try different wines carefully curated and delivered by the experts from Fuqua’s Wine Club
  5. Operation Blue Devil—Duke’s Armed Forces Association joins non-military classmates at Fort Bragg’s Special Operations training ground to experience the military’s leadership training

My Life Before Fuqua

I was an infantry officer in the U.S. Army. My last job in the Army was commanding a company of 120 soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division. As a company commander, I was responsible for ensuring that my soldiers were trained for combat.

My Life After Fuqua

I will be moving to Atlanta to be a consultant at Bain and Company. The professional development model used at Bain is a generalist model; I will be relying on the variety of classes taken at Fuqua to help provide me with an initial foundation for tackling a variety of business problems.

Consulting Club

Fuqua’s Consulting Club did an amazing job of preparing me for case interviews. Utilizing the Fuqua alumni network and particularly Fuqua veterans, I was fortunate enough to get the internship offer I was looking for and will be returning full time following graduation.

What I Love About Durham

My favorite part about living in Durham is the variety of activities that are available in and around the city without having to be in a very crowded space. I have a black lab named Cooper that I like to take with me on hikes; there are some great hiking options like the Eno River and Falls Lake. There is also a great minor league baseball team with a beautiful stadium. There are many excellent restaurants in Durham and the surrounding area. It’s a great combination of indoor and outdoor activities to keep you busy all year round.
