Why I Chose Fuqua

I was looking for a program that emphasized collaboration, teamwork, and diversity; Fuqua embodied all three aspects through the culture and structure of classes. The Health Sector Management (HSM) certificate was another major draw for me as I wanted to expand my understanding of the healthcare ecosystem. I’ve learned so much from the HSM courses, the faculty, and most importantly, my classmates who have a wealth of healthcare experience from various industries. Lastly, as a lifelong UNC fan, the opportunity to camp out for tickets to the Duke vs. UNC game was the icing on the cake.

5 Best Fuqua Activities

  1. Campout—It’s an event unique to Duke where all graduate programs camp out for chances to win men’s basketball season tickets. Even if you’re not a basketball fan, the weekend is full of other activities, and it’s a great way to bond with your classmates!
  2. FuquaVision—A staple each term where students use their creative juices to produce funny sketches of events that transpired during that term. If you are unfamiliar, I highly recommend perusing their YouTube channel.
  3. Fuqua Friday—Every Friday after classes, students, partners, families, faculty, and staff all gather in the Fox Center to mix and mingle over food and beverages. It’s one of the main reasons why Fuqua is such a tight-knit community.
  4. The Wa-Duke Challenge—A tradition like no other! At least once per term, students run to The Washington Duke Inn during a 15-minute class break, grab a drink, and run back before the second half of class starts.
  5. Free Food GroupMe—Fuqua students are passionate about sustainability; instead of wasting leftover food from events, they message the Free Food GroupMe the location of said food, and hungry students take care of the rest.

My Life Before Fuqua

I spent five years in the healthcare industry at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina in Durham. I started in their two-year rotational development program, moved into enterprise security, and by the end of my time at Blue Cross was the lead risk advisor of the third-party risk management program.

My Life After Fuqua

I plan to join EY in their business consulting practice as a senior consultant on their business transformation team. At Fuqua, I gained the hard and soft skills necessary to make the pivot from the healthcare industry to consulting from experiential classes like the Fuqua Client Consulting Practicum.

My Fuqua Activities

Fuqua Client Consulting Practicum—MMS Engagement Manager
Admissions Fellow

Fuqua Client Consulting Practicum (FCCP)

I got a better understanding of consulting team dynamics, how to strategize and apply frameworks, and hone my presentation skills, all of which paid dividends during my summer internship.

What I Love Most About the Fuqua Community

The willingness of the Fuqua community to connect and help out in any way they can is a quality that stood out to me well before I was a student. During the application process, I tried to connect with alums via LinkedIn and was pleasantly surprised at how responsive they were, even to a prospective student! As a current student, the Fuqua community continues to impress me: alumni banded together to crowdsource internship/full-time opportunities this past summer as my class and recent graduates’ employment were impacted by COVID-19.
