Daytime MBA Class of 2022 Student Charlie Sauter
“My C-LEAD team is composed of individuals from all different backgrounds. They have influenced my professional development because I have realized there is a magnitude of different ways to approach a problem. Often, the best solutions are developed when brainstorming ideas with someone who thinks differently than you do.”

Why I Chose Fuqua

I wanted an experience in the classroom and as a member of a team where I could experiment with failure to make myself a better person and leader. I also believe in Fuqua’s mission of using business as a platform for change. During the application process, I realized that Fuqua was different. I had current and former students take time out of their busy days to engage with me. It made me feel like I wanted to be a part of Fuqua and its culture.

Top 5 Favorite Places

  1. The best study spot off campus is Hi-Wire Brewing. This local watering hole has indoor seating, WIFI, outdoor yard games, and food trucks.
  2. The Duke Golf Club is a great way to enjoy campus with family and friends. The course is open to the public and has a patio to enjoy food and drinks.
  3. For families with children, the Museum of Life and Science in Durham is a great spot. It has indoor and outdoor science and nature activities and is one of my family's favorite places to spend half a day.
  4. The Al Buehler Cross Country Trail on the Duke campus is a great place to relax if you enjoy outdoor running or walking. The trail loops around Duke’s golf course and features numerous bridges and picturesque views.
  5. For a weekend trip, the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC, is a historic attraction. This place has something for everyone, from winter carriage rides around the grounds to summer strolls through the gardens and even wine tasting and homemade ice cream.

My Life Before Fuqua

I served in the U.S. Army for nine-and-a-half years as a Special Forces and Engineer Officer. I led diverse teams to conduct planning and operations. My duties included training, resource management, mission, and logistics planning while working with U.S. and foreign government agencies.

My Life After Fuqua

I plan on pursuing a career in general management. I have gained a wide variety of skills during my time at Fuqua that I can utilize to make informed business decisions moving forward. In operations and decision sciences classes, I learned methods and models that I can use combined with my previous leadership experiences to become an asset to collaborative organizations.

Distinguished Speaker Series (DSS)

I enjoy participating in Dean Boulding’s Distinguished Speaker Series. There are so many valuable lessons discussed along with emerging themes across industries.

My Favorite Fuqua Club

The Duke Armed Forces Association (DAFA) has been instrumental in my transition from the military to the civilian workforce. Classmates have helped guide me through self-development during internship recruiting including conducting mock interviews and reviewing my resume. The exposure I’ve had to international military veterans through the club has also been very eye-opening and rewarding. I have been impressed with the number of Fuqua’s veteran alumni in the workforce that continue to invest in DAFA and engage with the community.
