“I am a more conscientious leader now than when I arrived at Fuqua. My leadership experiences have felt more collaborative and have required more consensus-building than I had found in past professional environments.”

Why I Chose Fuqua

I looked for fit above all else in my business school application and selection process.  I considered a wide range of schools when I applied and ultimately narrowed the decision down to three final schools.

My experience meeting potential classmates at Blue Devil Weekend ultimately sold me on Fuqua.  When I attended, Fuqua was my last choice for school—I had more financial aid and stronger relationships with other institutions.  But when I met my classmates and saw the Fuqua community firsthand, I realized this was absolutely the place for me.  The in-person experience of Fuqua was vital to me as I made my choice.

5 Tips For Maximizing Your Time At Fuqua

  1. Jump into the community.  It is easy to get overwhelmed by academics and the career search, but Fuqua’s people are the reason many students come here. Don’t forget to spend time with your amazing classmates!
  2. Explore Durham. This community is remarkable and has a wealth of restaurants, cultural activities, and outdoor spaces.
  3. Make Duke a part of your Fuqua experience. There is a lot going on at Duke, including but not limited to its world-class athletic programs. Let’s go Duke!
  4. Step outside of your comfort zone to meet someone from a different background or try something new. The friends I have made here are people with whom I would have shared little in common in my prior academic settings, and I am so much more well-rounded because of them!
  5. Relax. It is all too easy to get overwhelmed by the task at hand in business school. Take time for yourself, and remember to stay true to the values that brought you here, even when the going gets tough.

My Life Before Fuqua

I worked in finance at Target’s corporate headquarters in Minneapolis, MN.  I held a variety of roles on the corporate financial planning team, ranging from forecasting sales and profitability for Target’s Canadian business to liaising between the finance and strategy groups.

My Life After Fuqua

I plan to pursue a career in strategy consulting back in the Midwest.

My Fuqua Activities

Professional Clubs

Week-in-Cities trips, on-campus recruiting, networking events, and personal outreach to alumni have all proven very helpful in my job search.

What I Love About Durham

Durham is a remarkably interesting city and a cool place to spend these 2 years of business school. Until moving here, I had lived in the Midwest for my entire life, and the Southern climate and culture have been a welcome change. The food scene here is unreal and very accessible, as the area has a very reasonable cost of living, and there is a wide range of nightlife and entertainment options. Because so many students come from out of town, we have explored the city together and formed a tight community in our new home.  Also, Raleigh-Durham International Airport is just a 20-minute drive from campus/my apartment, and it has a lot of flight options, making it easy to schedule travel around my class and activity schedules.
