Reflections

I hoped to gain a promotion or two from my MBA. If you’d told me at the beginning of the program that I’d actually leave my job and start two companies, I wouldn’t have believed you. I ended up starting and then selling a home care agency, starting and then selling a franchise, and then starting a business coaching business, which I am still growing. The MBA experience transformed me in so many ways. I remember thinking how hard the program was at the time, but also how cool it was.  It taught me I can accomplish so much more than I ever thought was possible.

Before Fuqua

I was a supervisor at EMC managing their largest intern program across three sites. My group was one of the biggest sources of new employees into the company, with an 85% conversion rate to full-time.

After Fuqua

I started a home health care company that eventually reached 30 employees, ran it for 3 years, and sold it in 2016. I now own another company, Leadership Girl, where I have coached over 200 entrepreneurs with an emphasis on marketing and sales.

Advice

Working in teams was one of the most rewarding and frustrating parts of the MBA. I loved my teams, but they also taught me many lessons.  I had to learn to accept help from others and to listen to others. I also had to learn to step up and argue my points, which was interesting as I was the only woman on one of my teams. It taught me so much about showing up to the table, and being counted, and being heard. Since going through that experience, I really have learned to ensure my input isn’t ever lost in the noise of the conversation.
