Why I Chose Fuqua

I attended the Duke MBA Pride Weekend and met a host of LGBTQ+ students and alumni who stayed connected with me during the admissions process and championed me on my journey to Fuqua. The time and consideration that they took to get to know me and help me along the way demonstrated that Team Fuqua is more than a slogan—it is a principle of the community, and it proved to me that I belonged at Fuqua. I applied early action to make my commitment and would not have had it any other way.

5 Tips for Maximizing Your Time at Fuqua

  1. Let your involvement be guided by passion and curiosity. Join a few clubs with missions that you care deeply about and join a few you that will allow you to learn and grow.
  2. Take classes that push you outside of your comfort zone. You can stretch the bounds of what you’re capable of if you challenge yourself and focus on learning rather than just a grade.
  3. Protect your time. Set boundaries for yourself and others by identifying when you need time and space. It will allow you to create balance in your personal, professional, academic, and social life.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from professors or classmates. The Fuqua community is incredibly supportive and wants to see you not only survive but thrive in the classroom and during your job search.
  5. Be authentically you! People will value and respect you most when you stay true to who you are and show your vulnerability as a friend, classmate, and leader.

My Life Before Fuqua

I worked in nonprofit fundraising for a sports-based youth development organization in Chicago. I then transitioned to prospect management at American University, where I analyzed wealth indicators to drive fundraising strategies before going back to frontline fundraising for the university. I also co-founded and served as CFO for a startup, an online LGBTQ+ crowdfunding platform and resource center.

My Life After Fuqua

I hope to work within health care marketing, connecting patients to therapies and products that can save and improve their lives.

Marketing Club

By connecting with current students and alumni at various companies, I was able to identify where my skills and passions were within the industry.

What I Love About My Classmates

I am constantly in awe of my classmates’ backgrounds, projects they’ve worked on, and obstacles they’ve faced personally. Some have started companies, are credited in film and television, made music you can stream on Spotify, or have international experience serving in the armed forces. Each person is fascinating and motivates me to pursue my wildest dreams in and out of the business environment.
