“The most profound element of my experience has been the other students in the program. My immediate teammates have been a tremendous source of support throughout our time together. Reflections

I think most people in clinical medicine are business-agnostic, perhaps because we’re all focused on learning how to take care of patients. While some of us start to develop a business sense, most don’t have formal training on how to lead a team or department or know how to read a balance sheet. This is where obtaining an MBA can augment one’s clinical practice. With Fuqua’s history and knowledge in the health sector alongside its reputation in the broader business world, I found the perfect combination that I was looking for in an MBA program. My experience has opened up a whole new world of opportunities, and I’ve discovered many different and exciting avenues to apply my medical background and expertise.

Before Fuqua

I was an assistant professor in interventional radiology, where I helped lead a close-knit team doing minimally invasive procedures using imaging guidance. I was also the medical director of a nursing unit responsible for vascular access at a children’s hospital.

After Fuqua

During the program, I was promoted to Director of Clinical Strategy for the Department of Radiology. I’m hoping I can have a broader impact on health beyond working just at my institution. I’m exploring how I can apply my clinical background and expertise to management consulting firms or even health care investing such as venture capital or private equity.

Advice to Prospective Students

If you have a partner and you're thinking about embarking on this journey, one of the most important things is for them to understand and be clear about your motivations for pursuing this degree. Having a mutual understanding ensures that you will have support for the time and effort you need to pursue the degree successfully. Make sure each of your expectations are clear and that your partner's needs are met. This will require personal sacrifices and late nights, but it will be much easier if you feel like you have a partner at home to help you through this journey. Also, implement an effective shared calendar system and be prepared to apologize, early and often!
