Master of Management Studies: Duke Kunshan University Student Michael Shue

“Developing long-lasting relationships with different classmates and faculty members is important to me. One way of doing this is to be an active participant at all types of Fuqua events. It is important to join different clubs and seize opportunities that allow you to connect with new people.”

Why I Chose Fuqua

I chose to attend Fuqua because I knew it would allow me to make personal and professional connections inside and outside of the classroom. Fuqua’s emphasis on team work and team spirit matches my style of learning and has fueled my efforts toward continuous self-improvement. I also wanted to be more certain in terms of what I really want to do for an occupation, and then solidify that path. I felt attending Fuqua would expose me to a wide array of ideas and individuals that can help me discover a concrete answer to my career question.

Before Fuqua

I interned at an investment bank in Beijing, and while there, I learned the importance of obtaining a post graduate education. The decision to pursue an MMS sources from the potential social connections one can make as well as skillset that one can develop while attending the MMS.

After Fuqua

My goal is to secure a job that fits my passion and interest in trading within three months of graduation. I have been trading solo and look forward to joining a team of traders working together to produce high quality trades. The ability to exchange ideas will allow me to grow at a much faster pace.

5 Random Things About Me

  1. Trading commodities and currency has been a passion of mine since the beginning of college. I’ve become much more disciplined and organized as a result of constantly working to improve my trading skills.
  2. I started playing piano at the age of eight. It has now been 15 years and counting; from hating this hobby to truly enjoying it, I can say piano has helped open the world of music for me and has enriched my life tremendously.
  3. I love sleeping. I tend to average 10-12 hours of sleep every night. My record is staying in bed for two entire days!
  4. I met my current girlfriend in New York during Thanksgiving, after watching Phantom of the Opera. It turns out that she was from UNC and this meant that we could continue our relationship as we returned to school after the break.
  5. My official middle name is Tiger. This is because my Chinese name includes the character for tiger and that I was also born in the Year of the Tiger.

My Favorite Professor

My favorite professor is Professor Sharon Belenzon, who teaches Principles of Strategy and is one of the most down-to-earth, kind, and easy-going instructors at Fuqua. His style of teaching encourages participation/discussion among the entire classroom. There is a case study each class session, and I find every one of them to be extremely valuable because Professor Belenzon teaches us the correct way to evaluate key decisions and the strategic motivation behind each decision. I believe this way of thinking will help me make smarter decisions in the future when I become an entrepreneur and have my own business.
