“Because I studied chemistry in undergrad, studying business is a big change, but the MMS program is teaching me that I can marry my two interests and find a field of business where I can use the scientific insights obtained in my undergraduate study along with the commercial insights I will gain from the program.”

Why I Chose Fuqua

The academic in me wanted to study at one of the best business schools in the world, while the female athlete in me wanted to play field hockey at the highest level in the U.S. At Fuqua, I had the opportunity to combine all of my ambitions and take on an intellectual challenge that would help me to grow and further define my interests.

During Fuqua

I am a member of Duke’s field hockey team. Managing a challenging graduate program while excelling in athletics is tough to master, but it can be accomplished through good time management. On the field, we must react quickly and solve problems in real time. Applying these skills to my coursework helps me manage both my studying schedule and my field hockey schedule.

After Fuqua

My bachelor’s degree was mainly focused on understanding the sciences, but I believe the full potential of science and technology can only be achieved when there is a solid business case for commercial success. This understanding helped me realize that I needed to obtain a working knowledge of business. I hope to use the tools I gain at Fuqua to make scientific discoveries successful in the commercial marketplace.

Top 5 Places to Study

  1. Fuqua’s team rooms—it’s convenient to roll right into a team room before or after class.
  2. Kaffeinate—This is a quiet coffee shop with really good coffee.
  3. The Edge at Bostock Library—If you need a change of scenery, this on-campus library has rooms similar to the team rooms at Fuqua.
  4. Mad Hatter’s—This is a good place to grab brunch and is close to the field hockey field (stop by and watch a game in between studying!)
  5. Sanford School—Again, it has good coffee—and food—and it’s very close to Fuqua.
