Todd Sega, Weekend Executive MBA program

"Not only did we have twin toddlers at the beginning of the program, but we also welcomed another child by the end of the program. Starting and growing your family during the program is very possible; you will share in that life experience with other fellow students. Being a student again is a great memory to demonstrate the importance of learning and growing with your child, even as an adult."

Reflections

When searching for an MBA program, finding a program that met me and my family “where we were” was paramount.  Life, especially with twin toddlers and challenging professional demands, often has lots of uncertainty and unplanned events.  As a result, the program needed to have a concentrated balance for learning through the weekend while allowing for me to be present during the week for my family and my job.

While the structure of the classroom learning was important, so too were the experiences and diversity of my fellow classmates which I knew would be another source of learning.  Additionally, I also sought a program that had demonstrated high alumni engagement representing diverse individuals, industries, and leadership positions.  The WEMBA program at Fuqua fit with my personal and professional timelines, had significant work experiences and industry sectors represented by other students in the cohort, and I had a chance to interact and view the successes of many other alumni and the rich network that exists to help support fellow classmates well after graduation.

Before Fuqua

Prior to enrollment, my role as the CEO involved the responsibility for all company oversight and resources including accountability for strategic decision making and financial performance, reporting to a board of directors comprised of public and not-for-profit shareholders.  The role was within a health care technology sector focused on health care quality, performance improvement, and value-based contracting.

After Fuqua

Upon graduation, I plan to help integrate our organization and products into another strategic health care technology company to help accelerate growth and valuate-creation opportunities.  Classroom learnings will allow applying knowledge of organizational structures, forecasting investment decisions, developing product strategy and establishing optimal pricing for new products and services.

5 Best Experiences in the WEMBA Program

  1. Broad Industry Exposure. Prior to the program, my working relationships and experiences were within a specific health care profession.  Getting to meet new people who are passionate about other subject areas, and working to solve problems in different industries was incredibly exciting.
  2. Solving a real-world problem. During the program, I had the privilege of participating in the Fuqua Client Consulting Practicum (FCCP). While this was in addition to the core coursework, the opportunity to help solve a real-world problem and learning about a new industry was extremely worthwhile.
  3. Shared Life Experiences. Earlier in your career, later in your career, starting your family, growing your family, whatever and wherever you may be in your life journey, there were fellow classmates in the same spot on that journey working beside you to learn and grow.  These shared life experienced helped to ground us all as we went through the program.
  4. Developing new skills. Being a student again can be very fun as well as humbling to remind you of just how much we can still learn about a topic or area of study.  However, getting to learn something new and apply it the very next week at your place of employment is extremely rewarding and also helps to retain the knowledge when you get to put it into practice so quickly.
  5. Ease of integrating the program into personal and professional life. One of the highlights for picking Fuqua was the ability for the program to meet myself and my family where we were throughout the program.  Being able to go back to school while continuing to grow our family and my professional career was just what I was looking for in a top MBA program.
