Global Executive MBA Student Valerie Coe
"This program has helped me be more introspective as a leader. I led teams in the military and find bridging that military-corporate divide to be an ongoing challenge. The holistic approach that Fuqua takes to the quantitative educational classes and the leadership and management skills has increased my confidence in my core business skills and knowledge which lets me more freely lead my teams."

Reflections

I chose Fuqua because from the moment I began the admissions process I felt like more than just a number. I loved the team concept. There are very few MBA programs that put the level of thought into their teaming/leadership training in the way that Fuqua does and it really stood out to me. Fuqua has incredible academics while also creating a collaborative rather than competitive academic environment which is invaluable. The faculty and staff are incredibly available and accessible, and you continue to receive their support through the entirety of the program. The values of Fuqua also stood out to me; business can be viewed sometimes as a ‘slimy’ or ‘shady’ thing where people are only concerned with money but Fuqua’s vision of “business as a force for good” in trying to bring a divided world together – is unique.

Before Fuqua

After completing 9.5 years of active duty in the Army, I spent about two years doing Audit and Risk assessment for the Army before I applied to Fuqua. I started my current job in May 2021, and began this program in July 2021. Fuqua has really helped me bridge some of the gaps between my military experience and corporate business.

After Fuqua

I plan to apply all I’ve learned here at Fuqua to assist businesses in strategic global technology transformations and implement go to market strategies. I plan to continue to refine and explore my leadership style to create and lead high performing teams.

Five Tips for Working in Teams

  1. Get to know each other—like REALLY know each other
  2. Share your non-negotiables, schedules, and create a realistic Team Charter
  3. Leverage one another’s strengths, learn each other’s weaknesses and provide candid feedback to each other to help one another grow
  4. Don’t avoid conflict. Embrace it. The Fuqua teams are a great time to “practice” those skills to negotiate or talk through tense situations in a low-threat, non-work environment. Take advantage of it
  5. Set your goals together and understand each other’s “why”. Having a common understanding and vision will help your team thrive
