Exemption Overview

The core curriculum at Fuqua provides a foundation for graduate business education. Faculty members expect each student to gain this basic core knowledge; however, many students may qualify to exempt from one or more of these core courses. If your undergraduate background or work experience has adequately covered core material, we strongly encourage you to exempt the core requirement and select an appropriate elective in its place.

You will not earn credit for a course you exempt, instead, you will gain the opportunity to take additional elective courses, which may be particularly important in shaping your career transition and job search. Faculty members encourage you to take courses outside of your particular area of interest as a means of enhancing your career goals and broadening your educational experience.

Types of Core Course Exemptions

2 types of core course exemptions are available:

  1. Administrative Exemption
  2. Exemption by Exam

You will be preregistered for the core curriculum. You do not need to do anything about registration before your arrival in July, except to apply for administrative exemptions. Exemption results will be sent to you via email. At that time, those of you who receive an exemption will be given instructions about finalizing your class schedule.

Some courses are restricted to exemption by exam only or by administrative exemption only. The Incoming Student Website's Action Items Checklist contains a brief summary of the exemption process and specific exemption guidelines for each core course.

Administrative Exemption

You may receive an administrative exemption based on prior coursework or professional experience, or you may wish to demonstrate your knowledge by taking an exemption exam upon arrival at Fuqua.

The guidelines for obtaining an administrative exemption are unique for each course and will require specific documentation from you. The appropriate faculty member will review your request and decide from the following:

  • Grant an administrative exemption from the core course
  • Grant a conditional exemption and specify which course you must take in place of the core course
  • Deny an administrative exemption request and encourage you to take the exam (if applicable)

All requests for administrative exemption should be emailed to Fuqua-MBAExemptions@duke.edu. The deadline for submitting administrative exemption requests is Sunday, August 18, 2024 at 11:59pm.

If you are requesting multiple administrative exemptions, please send a separate email (and copies of applicable transcript/s and necessary information) for each course you wish to exempt.

There is no administrative exemption for the following course, which offers exemption by exam only:

Foundations of Business Analytics (DECISION 610)

Exemption by Exam

You may take an exam anytime during the exemption exam period; however only one exam may be taken during a given time slot. You do not need to sign up or pre-register to take an exemption exam; simply access the exemption exam site and take an exam. Exemption exams may not be repeated.

There is no exemption exam administered for the following two courses, which offer administrative exemption only:

Foundations of Strategy (STRATEGY 835)

Marketing Management (MARKETNG 795)

Frequently Asked Questions

You will be pre-registered for the core curriculum. You do not need to do anything about registration before your arrival in August except to apply for administrative exemptions. During orientation, you will be instructed on how to obtain a copy of your class schedule from Duke Hub, the university registration system.

There are two types of core course exemptions available: administrative and by examination. You may receive an administrative exemption based on prior coursework or professional experience, or you may wish to demonstrate your knowledge by taking an exemption exam upon arrival at Fuqua.

Exemption results will be sent to you via email along with information about how your schedule will be adjusted to accommodate the exempted core course(s).

Students who choose to remain in a core course, for which they could have exempted, sometimes find themselves bored and inattentive. This can make for an unpleasant classroom setting for you the student, the professor, and the other class members! Exempting a course gives you the opportunity to select another elective course. Taking a course outside your particular area of interest is a means of enhancing your career goals and broadens you educational experience. This in turn helps shape your career transition and job search possibly attracting potential employers.

If you feel you could exempt a core course, you should take the exemption exam. Should you be granted an exemption, you still have the option of staying in the core course. You might surprise yourself!

You should not put off taking an exemption exam. Once the semester begins you will be busier than you can imagine so taking exemption exams early is a good practice.  The closer it gets to the start of the term, there may be fewer elective options available so taking exemption exams early will allow you to enroll in courses before the courses fill. There is absolutely no penalty for taking an exam and not passing.

If your exemption allows you to select an elective, you will be contacted via email by the Fuqua Registrar with your choices. Once a suitable replacement is found, the registrar will add the course to your schedule. Electives fill up quickly so you should apply for administrative exemptions, or take the exemption exam as early as possible.

When trying to decide whether or not to exempt, you should first read the guidelines for each course. If you are still unsure, you should follow the guidelines for obtaining an administrative exemption. The faculty will then be able to provide you with feedback that will indicate whether or not you should exempt. If you are still uncertain when you arrive on campus, you might make an appointment to speak with the appropriate faculty member to discuss your background.

You are not likely to receive an exemption where it is not appropriate. In the case of a conditional exemption, you would be required to take the next level of a course (for example, a conditional exemption in Finance 645: Financial Management would require that you take Finance 646: Corporate Finance). If, after the first week of classes in the higher level course, you feel you're in over your head, you may elect to drop back to the core level.

Because many of our students have backgrounds in economics or business/accounting, the highest number of exemptions is usually given for MGRECON 780: Managerial Economics; ACCOUNTG 590: Financial Accounting; and MARKETNG 795: Marketing Management.

Almost a third of the students exempt core courses.

You will only miss out on the boredom of sitting through material that is repetitious for you. You'll also move more quickly through electives which can only better prepare you for getting that new job.

If prior course work is something that you use in your job or something you feel you've retained, then you should still try to exempt. If it's been more than a few years and you don't feel you've retained the subject matter, you may want to take the course. When in doubt--take the exam. If you pass it, then you know enough to exempt the course. If you don't pass it, then you know you need a refresher!

First, the tuition costs don't justify wasting your time on material you already know. Second, taking classes where you already know the material will throw off the curve. Also, your GPA should not suffer from your decision to exempt courses. You're here to learn new material and in doing so, you will thrive in the program.
