Daytime MBA Student Gil Vazquez

"Since starting at Fuqua, I’ve grown from a leader who relied heavily on structure and directness into someone who leads with greater emotional intelligence and adaptability. What’s transformed me most is the environment. Being surrounded by diverse perspectives, learning through vulnerability in team settings, and getting comfortable asking for help. Fuqua has challenged me to reflect deeply, listen more, and lead with empathy. I’m still driven and mission-focused, but now I understand that impact comes not just from execution, but from how you connect with and empower others."

Why I Chose Fuqua

I chose Fuqua because of its genuine commitment to community and its unmatched support for veterans. During my application process, the Duke Armed Forces Association (DAFA) and Admissions team made me feel seen—not just as an applicant, but as a person. I wanted a program where collaboration was real, and leadership was values-driven.

Fuqua offered all of that, plus the unique opportunity to experience elite NCAA athletics as part of the broader Duke community. Whether cheering in Cameron Indoor or working with Duke Athletics through my internship, it’s added a special dimension to my MBA experience I couldn’t find anywhere else.

Before Fuqua

Before coming to Fuqua, I served eight years in the U.S. Army as an Engineer Officer, leading teams in both combat and domestic operations. My responsibilities included managing multi-million-dollar construction projects, training and mentoring soldiers, and coordinating with cross-functional teams to execute complex missions under pressure.

After Fuqua

After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in corporate finance, building on my experience as a Strategic Finance MBA Intern at PepsiCo. Fuqua has prepared me through rigorous coursework, hands-on learning opportunities, and a team-based environment that mirrors real-world business challenges. I’ve strengthened my financial skill set, improved my ability to lead diverse teams, and learned to make data-driven decisions while staying grounded in values-based leadership. I’m excited to apply these tools to drive impact in a finance role that blends strategic insight with operational execution.

5 Random Things About Me

  1. I have two dogs named Shaq and Kobe. My two Golden Retrievers are like my kids. Golden Retrievers have a special place in my heart.
  2. I have a passion for running. Long-distance running is my sanctuary. I spent five years as a collegiate cross-country athlete. It is how I decompress every day.
  3. I absolutely love sports. I bleed green as a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan. Catch me watching every game and planning Eagles watch parties with fellow students.
  4. I am an enthusiastic traveler, having spent three years in Germany and explored 36 countries. Greece holds the top spot as my favorite destination.
  5. I am a video game enthusiast. When I have downtime, video games and socializing with close friends are my therapy.

Team Fuqua

To me, Team Fuqua is a lived culture that defines the way we show up for one another both inside and outside the classroom. It means being part of a community where collaboration, empathy, and leadership thrive together. It’s about lifting each other up and recognizing that success is a collective journey, not a solo climb. If I were defining it to a potential student, I’d say “Team Fuqua is a culture where everyone has your back. No matter the challenge, you’ll find people stepping up without being asked, simply because that's who we are."

3 Ways to Show Up Strong—and Authentic—in Your Interview

  1. Bring your authentic self: Don’t just say what you think the interviewer wants to hear—share your real story, your values, and what drives you. Authenticity is what truly stands out.

  2. Make genuine connections: Approach the interview as a conversation, not a performance. Engage with your interviewer, ask thoughtful questions, and show sincere interest in their experience.

  3. Reflect on what Team Fuqua means to you: Be ready to explain why Fuqua is the right fit for you. Share how you see yourself contributing to the community and what the Team Fuqua culture means to you personally.
