MMS Student Beau Allen

"I came into Fuqua with essentially zero business knowledge and just wanted to focus on absorbing everything I could from the staff and other students. I have definitely picked up way more than I thought I would about so many aspects, from supply chains to finance."

Why I Chose Fuqua

I had a mentor during high school who had a business degree and a biology degree, and ran a firm that really appealed to me. After completing undergrad at Duke in Biology I had a great opportunity to stay in a place I had grown to appreciate and pursue a similar path. I think it was a great decision for me as I was allowed to keep a lot of friends but pushed to form many new relationships as well, due to the program's structure.

Before Fuqua

I did a couple internships in the biomechanics/biotech space which helped me see how there are many firms in specific spaces where there is a disconnect between management and the specialists. I wanted to help bridge that gap.

After Fuqua

I have received my acceptance into the accelerated MBA program for next year and will happily be returning to Fuqua for another year. After that, I am very open to many paths, but the one that excites me the most would be starting my own firm once I feel content with the tools I have gained to enrich sports from a scientific and business perspective.

My Favorite Quiet Spots on Campus

  1. The bench across from the flower section in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens that is quiet with a lovely view.
  2. There is a lone table near the printers in West Union (Brodhead Center) that doesn’t get much foot traffic and looks out onto the rest of the building through a glass pane.
  3. The Rooftop Garden at the Nicholas School of Environment.
  4. Bella Union at night.
  5. The Gothic Reading Room in the Rubenstein Library.

Fuqua’s Supportive Community

One of my Fuqua teams showed me diversity of thought and how intellectual people can use different methods, tactics, and timelines to get similar results. We all had very different backgrounds from nationality, culture, extracurriculars, but we all found success in the first half of the program. When we were all paired for the second half we learned how proactive some members were, or vocal, while others waited for crunch time or worked silently. Sometimes the differences were beneficial and sometimes they were a friction point, but I think it helped all of us prepare for work environments.
