MSQM: HA Student Spencer Millen

"I have been surprised at the pace of knowledge acquisition. I was using code to generate compelling data visualizations in my first term. By the second term, I could utilize unsupervised machine learning models. This program has quickly taken a daunting topic and made it approachable."

I am a board-certified pediatrician and Captain in the United States Air Force, pursuing a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.

As a neonatologist in the United States Air Force, my goal is to provide high quality to my patients anywhere in the world. I want to leverage my new skills in health analytics to advance the field of neonatology and improve the quality of care for all patients within the Military Health System.

Why Fuqua

I know that as a physician, my exposure to other sciences and fields can be limited. While my clinical knowledge is burgeoning, I also want to improve my communication of best practices beyond the medical community. I believe that requires a background in data analytics and the language of business. I evaluated several schools, and felt that Fuqua had the best program providing quality didactics with a focus on skill acquisition.

I think there is a distinct problem of too much data in health care. Increasing complexity of data models can bring better solutions. It can also create spurious associations which dilute our resources. The ability to manage these complex data analyses will be a key feature of successful leaders in medicine. I have already found applications for my health analytics degree. It has improved my ability to evaluate medical literature and has advanced my own research into data-driven care.
