MMS: Foundations of Business student Jan Delkeskamp

“Fuqua shows that you do not have to choose between intellectual challenge and community—it truly fosters both. One day, you excel in exams and the presentations; the next, you are bonding at events like canoeing, ice skating, or the annual MMS Formal.”

Why I Chose Fuqua

Prior to the MMS program, I was fortunate to engage in diverse experiences that shaped my passions and personal and professional aspirations. As a collegiate and professional swimmer, I thrived in the U.S. because of the team-oriented nature of the sport.

Volunteering with transatlantic organizations like the NC Zeitgeist Foundation, World Affairs Council, and the German American Chamber of Commerce; embracing student leadership roles; transforming programs like Supplemental Instruction and International Ambassadors; and later serving as Chief of Staff for my alma mater, all allowed me to discover my key elements of personal growth: global mindedness, teamwork, and the opportunity to build meaningful connections. These three pillars have been the foundation of my journey, and Fuqua embodies all of them.

Joining #TeamFuqua felt like a natural extension of that mindset, blending collaboration with an emphasis on leadership, relationships, and impact.

Before Fuqua

Originally from Germany, I moved to the U.S. in 2018 as I had the opportunity to join NCAA collegiate athletics. At Queens University of Charlotte, I served as a four-year team captain, leading Queens Swimming to multiple NCAA Championships before continuing my career as a professional swimmer, including the 2024 Olympic Trials. Beyond athletics, I served as Chief of Staff for Queens Athletics during Queens’ historic NCAA Division 1 transition. As a student leader, I hosted the Polish Ambassador to the U.S. on campus, represented the McColl School of Business, and served as an International Student Ambassador.

After Fuqua

My career interests are less about focusing on a specific industry initially and being very intentional about the people I will be working alongside. Aspiring to mentor the next generation of leaders, I aim to join a rotational program that allows me to grow into a versatile leadership role. Investment in human capital is a key priority for me, and I believe that joining Procter & Gamble as a Finance & Accounting Manager post-graduation aligns with my goal of remaining a lifelong learner, joining a talent-centric culture, and creating global impact.

5 Tips for Building Meaningful Relationships at Fuqua

  1. Ask someone you trust, “If I could connect and learn from one person, who would you recommend?” You will be amazed at where it leads. The Fuqua network is limitless—#TeamFuqua connects!
  2. Show Up: 80% of life is about being present. At Fuqua, simply showing up makes a difference. In a close-knit community, people notice when you are there. #TeamFuqua shows up!
  3. Small Gestures Matter: Be curious and ask thoughtful, engaging questions. Unsure where to start? Try, “What’s your superpower?” (credit to Shep Moyle). #TeamFuqua inspires with stories and insights!
  4. Offer Time and Support: Even without vast resources, we can all take small steps to help others. Go the extra mile—remember, “Life is about give and take.” #TeamFuqua serves!
  5. Show Appreciation and Gratitude: Take a moment each day to recognize and thank someone. Small acts of gratitude can have a big impact. #TeamFuqua appreciates!

Making an Impact at Fuqua

Recognizing the power of handwritten notes, I saw an opportunity to bring this meaningful gesture to Team Fuqua. With encouragement from classmates and MMS leaders, I partnered with Fuqua’s Building Management Office (BMO) to provide note cards to students.

Launching this initiative around Thanksgiving—the perfect time to express gratitude—allowed us to foster deeper connections and appreciation within the community. This small but impactful project exemplified Fuqua’s collaborative spirit, focus on meaningful relationships, and underscored that you do not need seniority or a title to make a difference. Team Fuqua encourages each of us to show up, engage, and make an impact.
