"My classmates’ diverse experiences, perspectives, skills, and unique visions for the future have provided an incredible education beyond what you learn in the classroom. The insights I’ve gained from peers across multiple countries and industries have expanded my thinking in ways no academic description of the program could fully capture. Their experience and vision have taught me a great deal—and have even influenced my own life plans. I’ve become more confident in my ability to grow an organization and lead meaningful change."

Why I Chose Fuqua
As I approached retirement from the military, I knew I wanted to turbocharge my skills and posture for new leadership roles. I explored several executive MBA programs but quickly realized that most formats didn’t align with my schedule or personal responsibilities. After letting go of the idea of attending one of the schools I had initially considered, a mentor offered some advice: “You should speak to a friend of mine who attended one of the best business schools in the country. He is familiar with several great schools.”
During that conversation, I shared my belief that great teams lead like a flock of wild geese—taking turns at the front, supporting and guiding one another. After listening, he simply said, “You need to look at Duke. I think you’d really like Fuqua.”
As I explored Fuqua further, the school’s strong emphasis on team culture immediately stood out. “Team Fuqua” wasn’t just a motto—it reflected values I deeply connect with. I also found that the program format aligned perfectly with my commitments. It became clear that Fuqua was the right choice for both my leadership philosophy and my practical needs.
Before Fuqua
As an acquisitions officer in the U.S. Air Force, I led multidisciplinary teams to deliver critical capabilities to the warfighter. I managed different lifecycle phases of several of our capabilities. During my last couple of assignments, my focus was to accelerate the acquisition and adoption of cyber technologies across the Department of Defense.
After Fuqua
I recently retired from the Air Force. Since then, I supported a friend as he pursued the acquisition of a small business that embraces a strong, team-oriented culture—much like Fuqua’s. However, I have taken some time off to travel and be with family. I am also exploring opportunities in different fields. I entered the Executive MBA ready to build new strengths in finance, marketing, and strategy, but I came away with much more. Fuqua not only gave me those tools—it elevated my leadership to a new level and challenged me to grow in ways I didn’t anticipate.

Real-World Impact from Classroom Insights
Leading Change
One of the key takeaways from the Global Executive MBA program has been refining my approach to strategic planning. I’ve learned best practices for accelerating change, while also recognizing that meaningful transformation often takes years to solidify.
Analyzing the Past to Shape the Future
I’ve applied statistical tools to analyze historical investments and outliers, enabling me to advise on financial decisions that should be approached with caution.
Budgeting for Growth
The Managerial Economics course sharpened my understanding of cost and pricing strategies. I learned to identify “financial ceilings” that can limit growth, and how to consider alternative strategies to break through them. I also learned fascinating topics like the Nash Equilibrium, which helped me see how competitive decision-making shapes outcomes across markets and organizations.
Assessing Performance
Although I didn’t score as high as I’d hoped in Financial Accounting, the effort strengthened my analysis skills. These are skills I put to immediate use while supporting financial reviews of new small business acquisitions.
Evaluating the Global Economic Landscape
The Global Markets and Institutions course increased my awareness of economic indicators and taught me how shifts in the economy can influence organizational performance. It deepened my understanding of the economic histories of different countries and the factors that drive sustainable growth and long-term prosperity.
